Well I was lucky enough to turn on the telly just as the white smoke started coming out. Rather intriguing.

Edit: And it is Joseph Ratzinger. I actually hoped he would be elected. He doesn't have the charisma of John Paul II and so Benedict the XVI, as he will be known, will do much to reduce the power and influence of the Roman Catholic Church in the civilized world while not giving it the boost in the third world that a pope from there might have given them.

Still no official news, and the BBC won't give me the live feed. It was rather quick, wonder which faction won.

It's Joseph Ratzinger. I'm pleased. He'll do a lot to make the church completely irrelevant in the modern world. Benedict XVI

Be interesting to see if anything splinters off from the Church after a few years of him.

Given the recent world-wide swing of a segment of the population to more conservative and traditional religious thinking, he could give a short term boost to the Church, until the more liberal groups get feed up.


He's only supposed to last until 2009 or 2010 ...
