Well I was lucky enough to turn on the telly just as the white smoke started coming out. Rather intriguing.

Edit: And it is Joseph Ratzinger. I actually hoped he would be elected. He doesn't have the charisma of John Paul II and so Benedict the XVI, as he will be known, will do much to reduce the power and influence of the Roman Catholic Church in the civilized world while not giving it the boost in the third world that a pope from there might have given them.

Wow. After a day and a half of voting. I'm impressed.

I didn't. I expected there to be a battle between the traditionalists and the reformers. I'm afraid that a quick victory is one for the traditionalists.

What reformers? That's why I say I was not surprised. The system was rigged by John Paul II to elect Joseph Ratzinger and that's who got the job.

So will you accept ?

Still no official news, and the BBC won't give me the live feed. It was rather quick, wonder which faction won.

It's Joseph Ratzinger. I'm pleased. He'll do a lot to make the church completely irrelevant in the modern world. Benedict XVI

Be interesting to see if anything splinters off from the Church after a few years of him.

Given the recent world-wide swing of a segment of the population to more conservative and traditional religious thinking, he could give a short term boost to the Church, until the more liberal groups get feed up.

He's only supposed to last until 2009 or 2010 ...

One more though, Ratzinger is old enough that some may have voted for him in the hope that he'll die soon enough to not be able to accomplish much, and electing him blocked some younger conservative from being chosen.

I'm not convinced relief is appropriate.

Make the best of it or else spend your time in lament for thing you cannot change.

Or I could ignore it until the problem is more readily apparent.
