Almost a Review: Shaun of the Dead
Oct. 2nd, 2004 11:41 pmI went with
spudicus to see Shaun of the Dead tonight before work. And it undoubtedly is the best Zombie movie I've seen, comedy or not. The winking at the audience was at just the right level. The one liners were zingy. And there was a heck of a lot of gore, just like a zombie movie should have. Now I don't want to build this up too much. After all if black comedy (and some of it is very black) isn't your cuppa, then you won't enjoy this nearly as much. And there is, as I said, quite a bit of gore though not to the level of zombies are getting killed with lawnmowers. And there are some genuinely sad moments as well.
I was on the edge of my seat metaphorically for almost the whole movie worried about the characters. But the tension level didn't go so high that I wanted to strangle the moviemakers. No Easter Egg at the end of the credits, but the music is pretty much worth sitting there for alone. So if this sort of laughing at deaths movie is your thing, go see this. You can thank me when you've gotten back from it.
Also note for Denver viewers. It is actually less expensive to see it at the Mayan than it is at a regular chain theater. Along with the atmosphere of that grand old theater (Shawn is playing downstairs in the excellent auditorium for now) that makes for a much better bargain in my opinion. Only $8.75 for a regular showing. Even if you're not in Denver you might check with your local Landmark theater.

Date: 2004-10-04 10:21 am (UTC)I wish it would come to a regular chain theater- we typically pay $8 at Pavilions.
