Okay I'm currently thinking I can do Minicon. I am thinking the best thing would be for me to stay a few days afterwards to socialize with my Minnesota friends. So right now my tentative plan would be to arrive about 10am on Friday the 9th and to leave about 4pm on Tuesday the 13th.

David Goldfarb over on RASFF is looking for a roommate are you still looking for one Larry? Um... Also if I do stay afterwards would any of the people who have suggested they would like to hang out with me have house space? I think I can make it from the airport to the hotel under my own power using the bus system. I made it to the airport last time, so even if there isn't someone to pick me up I'll be there. Will the setting up be started by about 11am?

It has also been suggested that I should make chili, specifically turkey molé chili, for the con. Is there is still support for this idea and if so who is willing to chip in by buying stuff or bringing equipment? Obviously I can't bring my giant stockpot from Denver. It would be cheaper to buy a new one a Cub Foods.

Obviously I have to get my registration in the mail in the next few days to get in under the wire.

What size stock pot do you need? I think I have an 8 quart pot I could bring down to the hotel.

That'll work for a normal to double size batch I think. Must do complex math now... <grin>

Larry offered one last time.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

I'm so glad to hear that it looks like you'll be able to make it to Minicon. I'd be heartbroken, etc. if otherwise.

I'll forward your note about the chili to Joel and Beth Phillips, who are running the consuite this year.

Alas, the only place I can offer to put you up these days is in Yorktown Heights, NY, which won't quite help just after Minicon. I'm staying over until Tuesday, too, though also getting in most of a week earlier than you are. :-)

Yayyippeezee. Yes, I'm pleased.

Checking the Frontier website (that's who I figure I'll fly on since Southwest doesn't fly out of Denver much and as low cost airlines go I think Frontier okay) it seems that I could get a cheaper fair by flying two days earlier. Though no so much cheaper that it would be worth it to miss the extra days of work unless I had a good reason.

Provided I fly an early morning flight that's actually on Horizon Air I can come in on Friday for $180. Anyone know much for or against Horizon? Obvously that isn't actually a bargin if the flight is on something like a Bombardier CR7 (http://www.alaskaair.com/www2/company/Fleet/Fleet.asp).

Otherwise it seems like a Friday to Tuesday trip would cost $300.

If I push it back to a Wednesday to Tuesday flight or a Tuesday to Tuesday flight it goes down to $170 even on Frontier. So if Horizon is bad for some reason it would be cost effective for me to stay an extra two days since my takehome pay is about $60 a day.

All this is to say, got any good plans for earlier in the week?

You can certainly stay here. And share a room at Minicon.

I've a 40 quart stock pot, and three or four smaller ones. I've already offered these to Joel, so they'll be available.

Times sound good. Let me know when you're coming in and I can see if we can get you picked up at the airport.

If you have PayPal, you can register online. And, the registration just needs to be postmarked by the cutoff.

But does the con get more or less of my money if I use PayPal?

40 quarts, thats about 10 gallons... I think that might be even bigger than mine. I think mine is about half of that. Or less. So I could probably safely 20x the recipie in that.

It's quite big enough to boil a fairly good sized child baby with room for a few carrots & celery, although, in gleaming stainless steel, it just does not have that appropriate cauldron appeal.

I also have a collection of le Creuset and Danish enameled cast-iron that could stretch from here to the hotel...

PayPal... it's there so that people can use it.

I have an even better plan. A fellow fan cannot attend so I'll be buying her membership if she agrees. Marilee really needs the money. And I'll save $10.

What Geri said. I'm having a really bad week and you've just made it infinitely better. I'm so glad you'll be there.

Glad I could help. So what are your travel plans? Just there for the convention? After? Before?

I'm planning to be in Minneapolis from Thursday through Monday, arriving as early as possible on Thursday. Currently I'm leaning towards a repeat of the 20 hour bus ride there and back to cut travel costs. This also allows the possibility of being spontaneous and staying an extra day if the spirit moves me.

Hurm. Maybe I ought to do late Wednesday if that's the case. Find someone to crash with and then I could do the Thursday thing setting up the con. Maybe. I dunno yet.

My personal opinion is that the head of registration has an exceedingly liberal policy about what constitutes a postmark. And your registration only needs to be postmarked no later than March 8. SInce February 24 is earlier than March 8, I think you're covered.

I'm very, very pleased at the prospect of seeing you at Minicon 39.

We could haul our five-quart crock pot down?

Certainly, but it wouldn't be enough room for more than about a 2.5x recipe. It would, in many ways, work better to use say four crockpots. If that wouldn't blow breakers and room could be found. I just emailed Joel to see what he thinks about all this.

Wow. Slow cookers coming out of the woodwork, so to speak. Hurm. I wonder what the load would be from about four crockpots.

We will be arriving on Thursday sometime and I, at least, will probably stay through Tuesday on account of cheaper fares that way. Alas, I have to report that [livejournal.com profile] pnh has told me that he and [livejournal.com profile] tnh will not be there. Probably [livejournal.com profile] bohemiancoast and family won't either. Sigh.

Although the decrease in fare for staying over until Tuesday would more than cover the hotel, I'd be happy to entertain offers myself.
