51st State?
Nov. 7th, 2012 11:06 amPuerto Rico had a ballot issue during the election. Apparently 54% voted to change status and then 60% voted for statehood. It seems like a pretty robust result in favor of change on the surface, but looking at the numbers on Wikipedia I find that only 71.8% expressed a preference about status. It seems to me that statehood is a pretty serious step since it is irrevocable under current precedent and I am not sure this justifies it, particularly as the new Governor who was apparently narrowly elected is against statehood. Possibly, since independence full or free association seems unpopular, they should have contest between just leaving things as they are vs. statehood.
