Hold Fast - Gormenghast
Saturday

I became self aware at 9am. This was a good thing because I need a full hour to get going and my first panel was to be at 10am. I did a nice shirt, this sort of evil military shirt made of a nice dark grey blue fabric with a sheen like it is made with glass and my wonderful Calvin Klein jeans. 28 waist and 32 inseam, I'm amazed every time I get into them. I think I also wore my new Mad Max jacket, this nice distressed brown leather affair with ring pulls on the pockets. I snitched a little way too sugary food from the consuite and grabbed a seltzer from my own room and I was off to the Morrison Room.

The Web of Self-Expression was our topic and we, myself, Shaenon, Paul, and MT Fierce ([livejournal.com profile] mtfierce, were all up on this dais like high court judges. We went and ruined the distant experts effect between ourselves and our audience of one person and one track manager by inviting them up to talk with us. We had fun talking for our 50 minutes about privacy, publicity, livejournal. blogs, web hosting, and so on then went our separate ways. Note, be prepared to round up audience the next time I'm doing a first thing in the morning panel.

I knew that the next thing I really wanted to do was the Dive Into Trivia event in the pool so I spent the rest of my morning hanging about talking with friends. Then I went home and got a few things I had left there, stopped by Costco and got some more cups for the consuite, a few more things for my party, and returned to the hotel. Change number two for the day was into my bathing suit in time to catch most of Dive Into Trivia and have a wonderful time swimming. The trivia was fun, but it interrupts the swimming. Next year I might just try to get some people to come down and swim for a while then hottub.

Back upstairs for another change of clothes, this time into vinyl pants, my knee high boots, mesh shirt, and elf ears. My line for the next few hours was, "I'm Legolas ... what? Can't an elf change his look after 300 years?" V. fun to be catty like this. I sat in on the hour with Shaenon Garrity, learned some interesting things about her, and then forgot about the memorial for The Elder Doris Beetem for the first bit of it. I dashed down the hallway on the third floor to find it still going strong. I shared a memory and everyone was rather weepy for a while. I think Rose, Doris (the younger), and their father appreciated it though. The big show of support thang.

After this I pranced around prodding people to do dinner. I found Shannon and got her to come along, suggested the thing to Rose & Crew, and eventually we ended up in three cars going to the Asia Café. It's not exactly where I thought it was, so at first two of the cars ended up at the Sung Garden, a place we've done in the past. But the Asia is just a block further on Alameda. I really enjoyed ridding in the Prius. I mean, electric car, totally living in the future.

At first the restaurant was very loud since there were about 200 (I exaggerate slightly) teens in the place eating and hanging out before a movie at the nearby theater. Rose spotted two having a soy sauce drinking contest. But they all left soon after we arrived and we got down to the serious business of talking and eating. I got to sit between Shaenon and Laura, v. cool.

Back to the hotel in time for the Not Ready for the Masquerade Costumes. I helped round up people with hall costumes to run on stage while the Masquerade stuff was being prepared. I don't have time to do the walk through but I don't mind showing off what I'm wearing (I know you're all shocked) so I like this program. This cute straight guy named Ryan that I met the night before was there. He looked v. fine in his silk Chinese sort of suit and did a back flip on stage.

Immediately after all the walk outs were done I headed upstairs to take off my costume and get ready for my party. On the way there I ran into Cheryl Wheeler, a young Dasfan, and she decided to drag along her friends Mark and someone who's name is on the tip of my tongue to help me with the party set up. Mark went for ice and the room was rearranged and I got out of those darned uncomfortable ears. By 9pm, the offical start time for the party, I was nearly ready to go. Which was good considering that I planned on having my friends start helping me at nine to have a party by ten. Martin ([livejournal.com profile] heck1701) showed up with the food soon after Dave Wilson went to call him on his mobile. Jim was around a bit before. People gradually started to trickle in as the Literacy Auction wound down.

Martin went back to his place to get a DVD player, but was sidetracked by work. So he didn't get to see most of the party, I hope it goes better for him next year.

Notable personages at the party at various times included Wil McCarthy, Walter Jon Williams (who I made sign a copy of Aristoi), Martin Heck (CoG), Jim (CoG), Paul Ciszek (recently returned Dasfan staying in one of my rooms at the con), Pat Thompson & Sue Anne Mitchell (Dasfans), Timmy & Kaia (Freeholdians? People I go to brunch with), Rose Beetem (best friend), Amanda (friend who I see regularly at MileHiCon), Jane (good friend and Freeholdian/Dasfan), and dozens of others. After the auction let out we had a good many people in both rooms. I might have been able to get by with just the one large room, but I would have needed to steal more chairs and it would not have been as comfortable.

At 1am I went to the Time Travel panel, which lasted until 1am and was rather sparsely attended. Several people noted me going out of my room (I was hard to miss in my tight black pants, white shirt, and black velvet coat) and concluded that the party must be over. Which was a bummer since it was still going though more quietly when I got back at the second 1am.

The panel worked out, though was sparsely attended. It is a fun idea, but perhaps next time we should combine it with the pajama panel and maybe do it next to the consuite so we can attract people from there or else decamp en mass to eat while chatting.

The party was a grand success. It was called the best at MileHiCon several times. The Crew didn't break the bank despite putting out a great spread of smoked salmon, tokay, wine, fruit, juice, and great cheese. Though next year I will note that I can get away with just a kilo of salmon and four kinds of cheese. Though it does not hurt to over purchase as long as I like to eat the stuff (which I do). I like the system of putting out more as the party goes along so the amounts of the table get eaten and nothing gets funky as the party goes on. Also the system of putting out knives and forks for people to carve off their own seemed to work with the cheese.

I changed clothes one more time into a Staff tee shirt, because I wanted to get comfortable after about 1:30am (the second one). The last partygoers wandered out about 3am after I got some help rinsing and cleaning. I think it was again Mark, but my memory is hazy. The one bad thing was that Cheryl managed to get a huge glass of vodka while my back was turned so she was giggly drunk when I saw her again returning from some other party where apparently she also managed to get booze. Grrr. Next year I shall watch her like a hawk when she's anywhere near my liquor.

I got to bed at about 3:30 after doing some more cleaning. Day Three Coming Soon to a 'zine near you!
