Good Times - INXS and Jimmy Barnes
Friday
I awoke fairly early for having stayed up too late packing and cooking. The remainder of my hasty preparations took until noon. After picking up some fresh fruit and dropping off food at a friend's house I arrived at the Denver West Sheraton for MileHiCon 35 at about 1pm. I'm sure I made quite an entrance wearing a casual outfit of black jeans, my blue Hawaiian shirt, and a turquoise & bone necklace. I was also deliberately scruffy since that goes with a sort of beach bum look. Hardly anyone realizes how much thought I put into looking the way I do. <grin>
The first useful thing I did was to help with setting up registration, after a while there I went down to check in and then up to check out how things were going in the green room and consuite. It all seemed well under control so I grabbed a volunteer and a cart and unloaded all the DASFA stuff into my room. Anna (I think that's her name, if not sorry, sorry, sorry) is just a darling, nice and helpful in getting all those DASFA books upstairs. Not that it was particularly hard work, but it is very difficult to move a cart, open a door, and look graceful about it all at the same time.
Back to registration where I ran into Shaenon Garrity author of Narbonic, our Comic/Mad Scientist Guest of honor. I was very pleased to see her as it was Rose and myself who lobbied hardest to get her as a guest, one of the perks of going to all those meetings. She was looking for cash to go out to lunch so I ran around with her for a little bit looking for Johanna, our Treasurer. No one had seen her yet, but it was almost 3pm so we knew that she would have to show up at registration to give them the start up money. That worked, then I was off to see if green room needed anything, and there was Walter Jon Williams. (More excited glee, I really like his books.) He said he needed to get to a drug store, so I volunteered and took him over to the nearest King Soopers.
I got to have a pleasant conversation with him on the subject of Denver drivers. He said we were pretty bad and I agreed with the caveats that most of the drivers were not from here having moved into the state in the last decade and that traffic always seems worse in unfamiliar cities. It's a natural Denverite response, blame the problem on tourists and newcomers.
Back to the hotel where I ended up moving the books from my room back down to the Dealer's Room so DASFA could sell some of them. Eric VonHalle was helping out Jane with handing out badges to late arriving dealers so he manned the table first. I noshed on a few snacks in the consuite and sent out a minion to get fliers for the party copied and bookmarks made for DASFA.
I was informed after a while that Eric needed a chance to go steal some food so I went down at 6pm to cover for him thinking that I would have someone to cover for me so I could see opening cerimonies for the first time ever. It was not to be. Though I was quite pleased to talk to many, many people about DASFA while selling books and handing out bookmarks. I finally got out of there after eight and grabed annother snack, talked with friends, got a key card to Jim (one of Crew of Grenadine who was staying in the second room) and finally changed into my PJs. Well not really pajamas, as was pointed out to me several times. I wear next to nothing to bed, but when I'm cold I'll wear my black terrycloth robe to bed. I actually bought it the first year I was on the Pajama Panel.
I was in excellent spirits even though I didn't have any spirits in me. The subject for our panel was Genetically Engineered For His/Her Pleasure. Once I got there I found out that I was now moderator due to the number of other panelists who had chickened out. Despite not being able to remember a single one of the moderator questions I wrote a few weeks earlier we have a grand time talking about detachable whatnots, furries, and other silliness. We agreed that what genetic engineering really needed to give us, more than a greater variety of interlocking parts, was longer more intense orgasms for men and the ability to go for 'Wham Bam Thank You Lad' for women when they want. So in other words each side wants some of what the other has. I had a lot of fun on this one. Shannon said it wasn't that bad considering the sick minds of the audience.
After the panel I dashed back up to change into a nice skin tight blue blue shirt and a pair of jeans. This was my casual outfit so that I could do the DASFA sponsorship of the consuite. We had plenty of cookies at our cookie crunch, but Jane was irate that I didn't bring ice cream. I was going to, but I just didn't have time to get any on my way over. Well I might have had time, but it was all very difficult. I'll do the ice cream next year if we do the cookie crunch again.
I hung around the consuite for a long time talking up DASFA, handing out bookmarks, and having delightful conversations. Bedtime was at about 1am. Fin day one.

Date: 2003-10-30 10:37 am (UTC)I don't really do gender issues. I like flirting with guys, being catty, and dressing up, but I'm not an activist. That and knowing more people at Minicon are the reasons I'm not doing Gaylaxicon this year.
