Recent freljed in the Fannish Republic: [livejournal.com profile] aethereal_girl, [livejournal.com profile] branfionn, [livejournal.com profile] chadu, [livejournal.com profile] mroctober, [livejournal.com profile] rushthatspeaks, [livejournal.com profile] sabaoth, [livejournal.com profile] sabledrake, [livejournal.com profile] weirdquark, [livejournal.com profile] yonmei

Now I know Chad [livejournal.com profile] chadu and Christine [livejournal.com profile] sabledrake from back in the days when I was an annoying figure on the Pyramid Magazine message boards. And I know [livejournal.com profile] mroctober from his writing, I reviewed his collection of short stories Trysts back when I was first starting Outer Fandom (And yes you people should all check it out, if you're local you can borrow my copy and then go out an buy your own). But the rest are froods and unknowns from here on LJ. So if you don't mind let's play tittle for tattle. Tell me why you freljed me and I'll tell you something about myself (and I do take requests as to what I should tell about).

Oh, I'll be honest... you're smart, very attractive, and into fandom and thus I simply had to add you...

Oh so much the same reason I would have freljed you if you had not beat me too it, eh? Now I have to think up a secret you might like to know. Hurm... Death: The High Cost of Living was the first comic book I ever read. And I'll expand on that into a pointless story in the next couple days.

I was pouring through friends-of-friends-of-friendslists and came across a recent entry of yours where you tell the story of the firebird and the little girl. It was superb... and I decided on the spot to freljed you so as not to miss any future stories and to peek a little more into who you were.

BTW, glad the party went so well!

I'm continually amazed that people like my stories. I am going to write another Kiska story soon, but here's a secret. I modeled Baba in my mind as one part Baba Yaga and one part my own Grandma Frances. So it came out a mix of a sharp old wisewoman, but quite a bit nicer than Baba Yaga. Plus her house layout is similar to the one that Grandma F had on Jasmine street, though without the Russian outside. Grandma F is Swedish and Colonial American after all.

Well, I saw you comment on [livejournal.com profile] snippy's journal, and I said to myself, "Self, that's Mishalak from rassef." (I am occasionally there, although I haven't been for a bit.) I remembered that you were fairly interestng from there, so I decided to go look at your lj. And it was interesting. And here we are!

Brain death for a moment. Wow, I don't remember many of my comments on [livejournal.com profile] snippy's journal, but even though I disagreed with her rather a lot I tried to be nice. Well that just confirms my opinion that a person has got to be either oh so smart or oh so kind. And like Elwood P. Dowd I've had enough of being smart.

Let's see, a secret or mystery. Hurm. I like the soundtrack to Dark City a lot more than the movie, though it was fun too. I love to listen to the eclectic collection of jazz tunes from the movie and songs that were either inspired by it or just were associated in some way with it in the mind of whoever was putting together the disc. I own a lot of soundtracks and I listen to them a lot, modern day opera.

Well, you added me first, and I'm a somewhat knee-jerk reciprocator. But I've been very pleased about doing so with you; you're an interesting writer.

I'm a somewhat compulsive reciprocator too. I don't always read everyone's lj consistently, but I try to. But I must not think about politics, otherwise I might turn into the Earl of Gurney, so I tend not to read political posts if I can help it.

Right, you want a secret? <grin>

Lesse...

I first came across you when you responded to something I posted in Gaudior's LJ about queer and Ethan of Athos. I was confused because I had asked her about a character that I'm writing and you responded as if the character was in the Bujold series. Is there an Ariel in Ethan of Athos or was there just a misparse?

I read your LJ after a few times but as I am very bad at getting into new habits, I didn't really run across you again until Gaudior added you to her friends page, which I am in the habit of reading.

And you seem fun and write interesting things.

So.

Funny thing, I found [livejournal.com profile] gaudior when searching for information about Byerly Vorrutyer. I think I mentioned that at the time. I think you are thinking of Aral Vorkosigan. He's in many of her other books, but not Ethan of Athos. He's Miles Vorkosigan's father and the love interest in Cordilia's Honor. Love that book by the way. He's also a main chracter in the book Barryar.

Something about me. Well I once got all weapy in front of Lois McMaster Bujold because I really liked her vision of places in the future where being gay wasn't a culture, wasn't a big deal, was just about the gender you like having sex with. Probably my most fannish moment ever.

Yes, I've read it. I thought you might have thought I meant Aral -- it's the closest thing to Ariel that I've come across in the small bits of that universe I've read.

I like that idea about being gay too. Although I think I agree with Gaudior that it isn't queer. Still very cool though.

The Ariel I'm writing and the one I was talking about is a 19 year old gay actor who flames impressively because he thinks it's fun. That and his mother has been friends with a drag queen of the 40s musical/nightclub sort since he was three. But mostly being over the top is just a way to get attention. (Oddly enough, when I started writing him, he wasn't supposed to be gay. He had to come out to me.)

Writing is weird sometimes.

I didn't think it was a love in, so much as me being curious and offering the (weak) bribe of telling weird tidbits about myself. And yes all my freljs, froods, and friends are free to ask questions of me. And I'll even answer them. Here on my livejournal. So if you don't mind having the question attributed to you... <grin>

Oh so this is your way of playing with me and appealing to my curious nature so that I ask the question most burning in my mind and having me associated with that question and me labelling myself as the freaky psycho guy from Australia. Not a bad plan but I have a counter plan. I *may* just leave you an anonymous note and ask my question that way. You’ll never know who it’s from or if indeed I did ask you a question or not. Who knows, I may just do that, or I may not. ;)

freljed!

Good term! Freljed.

I am still relatively new here. I checked out friends of friends and communities that interested me at first. Whenever I felt a kindred spirit, I freljed them. Then got up to 9 (you're going to laugh) and am taking a breather before loading up my reading schedule much more. I suppose normal people skim or check occasionally on so-and-so.

Then I read you a bit and I liked your personality. I agree that your writing is good and since I am headed back that way (what brought me here initially - getting back to writing), it is delightful to be with articulate and caring people.

I can't imagine how people with hundreds of friends can cope with it.

I look forward to reading you and perhaps offering something of help or entertainment to you.

I really am a very friendly and loyal person. Just immensely disorganized/creative...

And when hurt, I can run like the wind...

It actually comes from the same post where I declared frood to be the proper word for someone who's a real life acquaintance, but something more, but not quite yet a friend.

Froody (http://www.livejournal.com/users/mishalak/62338.html)

[livejournal.com profile] rmoorman get's the credit for freljed. Great friend I have brunch with him and a buncha other friends on most Sundays. I just promote the word as one of my random quixotic word crusades. Like how I used crisp instead of chip for about two years just because. Though at the time the reason I gave was that it was more logical, since a chip is obviously thicker than a crisp. Oh look, a random factoid thing about me.

I like frood too. Reminds me of Stranger in a Strange Land - grokking people. Was it friendship, lovership or something new...?

Maybe we will never know. (The other is like live-journal friend....)

I was married to an english guy before my better current husband and there a potato chip is a crisp. And now here in America a french fry is a Liberty Fry.

You've come a long way (down) baby...

No one I know is calling french fries liberty fries. And I do think that is the proper term for the thin fries, since they are frenched (thin cut) potatos deep fried. The big thick ones, those are chips. But I'm never going to be able to convert anyone here in America to using the term crisps I suspect.

Well, you were on my fiancee(gaudior)'s friends list, and she did that nifty thing a while back where she put up excerpts that she liked from the journals of everyone on her friends page, so I started poking around and reading the journals, and I liked yours. Fannish, queer, intelligent, uses good grammar, cooks, writes fun stories... what's not to like?

And I freljed you back right away because you would be so easy to make into a god if you asked. Dead easy sacred animal. (Yes being silly, referring back to this gods thing (http://www.livejournal.com/users/mishalak/44764.html) I did that took a lot of time for some people. I still need to finish some that came in late. If I ever do it again I'm going to make people send me information rather than searching for it.)

I didn't notice I was in there right away. In fact I didn't notice that your fiancée had freljed me right away, because I was too busy skidding along with so much to do.

Now I have to ask, where is the Mishalak with good grammar? I've never met the sod. If I ever do I'll beat him up and steal it from him so I won't have to struggle with my writing so much. <grin>

Seriously when my IQ was tested for something or other way back in the 8th grade I scored very high in math, spatial skills, and all sorts of things. But my verbal was below average. What I was told (and I only half believe because so much of these things are guess work) is that I do okay in verbal areas because I spend so much time thinking about them. Sort of like using a garden spade to shovel snow. It doesn't work as well, but if you spend enough time it will get the job done. It is a small wonder that I became such a insatiable reader despite the difficulties I can have with it.

*laughs* It's kind of a sacred animal by default. And a long and complicated story... I do not collect platypodes. My friends collect them for me, in a variety of ingenious and untraceable fashions. Consequently, I have, at last count, seventeen in various media, including stained glass, ASCII, and a four-foot inflatable one. I name them after various philosophers, and people give them to me to see what I will name them. It's just sort of snowballed.

You do write very well, IMO. Interestingly readable. This is not as rare a quality on the net as it used to be, but it is still rare. You put thought into it, as you said, so it comes out nicely.

I wonder if a community of Pyramidians and ex-Pyramidians is going to grow up here. If so I'm in trouble because then there will be people about who remember what a bore I used to be. Gah. And I won't be able to recycle any of my better posts from there into new material for my journal. <grin>

Right then, a secret or something. I lost my wallet at one of the Star Wars movies. I think it was Return of the Jedi. It had ten whole dollars in it, which was a lot of money for a kid of about seven. I tend to remember all the things I've done like that. Part of the reason for my melancholy disposition.
