Yesterday I was practicing with a good old 7x57mm rifle. If I still don't have a job in a few weeks and my father and I get lucky in the drawing we'll be headed out to find a big incautious elk. We might try down south somewhere in the San Juans. And even if the plan does not come to fruition it was good to have a refresher in basic gun handling.

When I was growing up, I remember expeditions where a big gang of my cousins, uncles, aunts, etc. were camped for many days in the Coast Range of California hunting deer. When I was older, my cousins would head to the Rockies and hunt elk, exchanging some of the meat they brought back for fresh produce from my grandparents' extensive garden. I ate well growing up, although I didn't realize how good I had it until I got older.
