A New Definition

§ Whereas as I, Mishalak, the Minister of Memory and Culture for the incomparable City of Denver have noted that the need for a word meaning to know a person, but not well enough to call that person a friend.

§ Whereas using the word acquaintance to describe such persons is cool, impersonal, and awkward.

§ I do hereby declare that the world Frood coined by the extraordinary author Douglas Adams in his book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to be used to describe such personages and relationships.

§ Given under my authority this day the 9^th of December in the year Two-Thousand and Three.

Not bad! But really, sometimes one needs either a clip board or an official sounding title. Towels only work if you're trying to get stuff and people think you're on vacation. A title on the other hand can get you past guards and locked doors saying "Authorized Personnel Only", because if you've got a title, well obviously you're one of the authorized. I think Mishalak pointed that out in book 6 of HHGG.

There are books? All I have are the radio plays (12 episodes) Hey are there videos too? It would be funny to see the characters on the screen instead of just imagining them. I imagine they'd look much like the people on red dwarf!

Yes, Douglas Adams did books and I'm pretty sure he worked on the scripts for the TV series. Each time, however, he changed it, adding new plot elements and digressions into each version. I still like the original BBC radio series best, but they all have their plusses. The TV series, for instance, had Disaster Area, the rock band that played so loudly that they played their instruments by remote control from a bunker miles away. And the lead guitarist who was "spending a year dead for tax purposes." The technology wasn't really there to make Zaphod's second head convincing, and I didn't like the casting for Trillian at all, but there were definitely some really amusing parts of the TV series. Like the dish of the day at the restaurant. Hehehehe. -Rose

I'm sure he knows that Rose. He's just trying to out weird my reference to a book at that doesn't exist. Or something.
