Eye Shadow
Nov. 9th, 2003 07:19 pmOkay I remember how Johnny Depp looked in eye shadow. Would anyone who has worn it care to enlighten me as to dos or don'ts? I have an opportunity to pick up some makeup cheap if I want at a store that's going out of business locally. They're unloading things like makeup at 40% off and I was thinking I might risk picking some up for my next costuming event. Arrr. Or possibly "Still the prettiest!"

Then, it's all about what results you want. A classic is to use a light shadow on the entire eye, all the way up to the brows, and then accentuate the globe lines with darker, matching eyeshadow.

Date: 2003-11-10 08:14 am (UTC)Leaving aside all mentions of what colors you should use, et cetera, because it all depends on the look you are trying to achieve (subtle? use several shades of neutrals. Frank N. Furter? the brighter the better. etc), I will give you some safety tips:
1. If any part of your eye makeup, particularly mascara or any liquid product, is over a year old, throw it away. It gets thick and clumpy and can breed bacteria.
2. If you read stuff that says "line the eyelid under the lashes, next to the eye," ignore it. You can injure your eye that way, either by poking yourself with an applicator or by having stuff fall in your eye. Your lashes are there to protect your eyes; let them do their job.
3. If you wear contacts, put them in BEFORE you put on makeup. Otherwise you're likely to get makeup substances between the contact and the eye. No fun. I am not kidding.
4. When you buy makeup, buy a good eye makeup remover. These are gentle solvents so you don't have to rub and rub your eyes to get the stuff off. That's bad for your skin and gets stuff in your eyes too. And you don't need waterproof mascara, really. It's just that much harder to get off. Try to avoid going to bed with eye makeup on. Okay, I mean, try to avoid going to SLEEP with eye makeup on.
5. When applying eyeliner, set the base of your hand on your chin or cheek to steady it and hold the pencil or brush in your fingers. Not so wobbly that way.
Have fun!
