If I ended up with more income.

I've made my choice about what I want to spend my money on and I'm not unhappy. I think I've made good choices with my limited resources. However there are always more things that a person wants. This is sort of a clarification of an earlier post that probably gave people the wrong impression. So this is a work in progress. I'll probably update it as I think of more of my unlimited wants.

Tea! I'd get a big tin of Darjeeling, a smaller one of Ceylon, and maybe another thing of green tea and a mess of herbal stuff too.

Two (2) Mercury Dimes, one with a hole to put it on my necklaces when I feel like having a bangly thing.

More boxer briefs. I really prefer boxer briefs, but I usually buy just ordinary briefs because how can I afford $10 for one pair of underware?

10-Inch hard anodized cooking skillet.

A number of movies like The Adventures of Baron Munchausen for example. But I still would not buy everything I've ever liked, even with unlimited money. Only those things I'd want to watch over and over again.

Better food over the course of a year. More fish, less ramen noodles. Maybe even enough that I would

A better printer would also be very useful. Produce those fanzines!

Hair removal. I don't like shaving my armpits, and thought the price is within the realm of possibility even for my finances, I just can't afford that and also go to all the conventions I want to do. With unlimited money I'd also be tempted to make my legs match my torso. But that's really expensive, almost enough for a down payment on my biggest item.

A smallish house. Say 1,000 square feet. I don't need anything excessive.

Now had I won the lottery I'd buy a big house. Or buy a good sized one and expand it. And the first floor would become the new DASFA clubhouse.

Printers are becoming very reasonable.

Everything on the list is is affordable except the house. A mercury dime costs all of 60ยข. I just have to watch my budget and not do all the little made purchases that I would like to make.

One of my fantasy purchases - from the 'if I win the lottery' section - is a de-sanctified church or equivalent. Which I would then remodel to become the 'Twin Cities Center for Fannish Groups and Activities'.

It needs a big performance area that doesn't interfere with the stuff happening elsewhere, a reasonable kitchen, a big general use area, a real office area, and some small(er) meeting / breakout rooms - one of those rooms, probably a largish one, gets set off for a library. After I'd spent entirely too much time planning, I realized that what I wanted for features was the basic Protestant Church set. (May be the same for Catholic / Judaism / Islam - it's probably the same set that you arrive at for any church that functions with a 'large congregation + leader' model of service)

Dang, that's true. The basic church / convention-function-space model holds practically all the fannish activities I can think of. Paying for it, is, of course, the big fat horrible thing.

Yeah - isn't that frightening?

Paying for it

This has been one of my 'if I win the lottery' fantasies for years now. At first, I thought I was going to have to have it custom-built from scratch! When I finally (after entirely too many years!) realized that I was building something that had the same facilities as your basic church, that took a big bite out of the potential cost. Adding to that the fact that I would be thinking of putting it somewhere in South Minneapolis convenient to both freeway and bus lines, the fact that I could look for a class of existing building was a relief! I think it also makes the whole thing slightly more feasible - I could talk to the local church aggregate groups (bishops and their staff, ecumenical councils, etc), trying to find a church that was feeling pinched by their existing space, and making them an offer that would be difficult to refuse. After all, what do you do with your old church building after you've built a new one? I'd be willing to buy the old one for a reasonable price, and bribe them with seed money for their new building fund!

This is a serious "if I won the lottery" fantasy - I have to be walking away with at least a couple of tens of millions cash after taxes, because the fantasy calls for both creating the building (allocating a million, maybe two, to do it) and setting up a trust fund to cover ongoing maintenance, taxes, etc., with another million.

I suppose my win the lotto fantasy is rather common amoung fans. Though I really want to convert a large house. I want there to be sleeping rooms for after those late night parties and I am currently enough of a fan that I'd want to live upstairs from the club. I'll have to write up my fantasy SF club sometime.

Hey - go for one of those old traditional establishments! One with the attached living quarters for the official celebrant. Or at least on the same lot.

Unless the church were one of the old very, very small ones it would overwhelm our club. Our usual attendance is about 20. The biggest I've seen it is 30. We might get a few more having a clubhouse, but I don't see us having more than 40.

I don't think I got the wrong impression. You make careful choices about how to spend your limited money. That's admirable. But buying you some tea would be a very small thing for me. I can't buy people houses and cars and trips or even con memberships (well, I could do that one once in a while), but I can darn sure buy you tea.

How about you just buy me a cuppa when I come up for Minicon? It would save on shipping charges. <grin>

Hey! You might check out Caphalon sales on Amazon - they have a dozen variations on the 10" hard-anodized skillet theme. What's your favorite skillet shape? Omelet pan? Flat bottom? Wok-ish?

Holy mole! That's way more expensive than I thought. I'll have to move it down the list. Calphalon Commercial Nonstick 3-Quart Chef's Skillet with Lid $123.99 Maybe I should take off my christmas list. If I was going to blow that much money I'd blow it on my fanzine printing or going to Minicon.

No! Wait! Amazon has wildly varying prices on Calphalon stuff. They have another 9" hard-anodized skillet for $20, and I bought a large Calphalon hard-anodized pan with lid (that I use every day) a few months ago for about $35.

Don't worry - keep looking!
