Visiting the Shore
Jan. 19th, 2006 07:32 pmLast night...
The clouds had cleared off part of the sky, but it was quite dark as I went to the seawall. The sea had withdrawn further than I had thought it would be given warnings about high surf, but then there was hardly even a breeze coming off the ocean. I cautiously went down the beach unable to see much of anything except the white foam colored slightly by the distant sodium lights. To my right the bright lights of the Cliff House lit up a few ghostly rocks with waves and spray around then. Far out over the darkness I could see a few dim lights of ships at sea and perhaps a fishing vessel. They looked very small in the darkness.
My footing was unsure, I am sure I trod upon things I would have avoided by daylight like seaweeds and random flotsam. When I was finally within a few feet of the waves I could see sand pipers probing the sands, that was most unexpected. They might have been white balloons except for the way they moved and the hint of three black sticks attached to each.
I turned away from the ocean and walked back to Safeway to buy some sugar and flour. It was much easier to see where I was going with the lights ahead of me.
