Mishalak Reviews: The Snow Walker
Jan. 4th, 2006 07:38 pmI do not understand why this movie did not get a theatrical release. The audience might be somewhat limited, but it is not what I think of as traditional film festival only material. It may be part of the coming trend of some movies only get such festival releases before going to disc. Whatever the case I did not see it until I saw a bootleg disc from Ecuador. Even in that grainy edition it was a stunning movie about the dangers of the wild and dependence.
And the special effects were perfect. Totally subtle, I thought they had just filmed the actors actually running down caribou and killing them, yet it had the standard disclaimer at the end. The "making of" feature showing exactly how they fooled me with such simple techniques amazed me.
It is a simple story; young man learns a lesson. Traditional even, the man from our modern culture learns how powerful the native tradition is in its context. But it is not at all saccharine about the lesson or about the drawbacks of the traditional hunter-gatherer ways of living.
I recommend this movie for people who like movies about living in the wilds like The Edge or The Emerald Forest.
