I had an interesting experience last night. For my dessert I had a Cherimoya or Custard Apple. It was a very tasty fruit, though I think it will not become one of my favorites. It was very tasty, but it had a great many seeds. Plus I had a devil of a time trying to figure out if the one I picked out at the store was ripe or not and they are rather expensive due to their delicate nature.

That aside everyone ought to try one if the chance presents itself. It had a light delicate flavor and a texture similar to a banana. The flavor is also somewhat like a banana, but with a hint of a sour/floral flavor like apples and strawberries together. Or maybe pineapple.

I had this wonderful fruit shortly after I had a dinner of a sort of Mexican stir-fry. Chicken, tomatoes, hot hatch chilies, and onion. Not at all a bad combination in my opinion.

For today I have more chicken and lots of fruits and vegies that I picked up at various local markets. I've even got more peaches, the very last of the season.

W£hen I was somewhere - either Spain or Austin , or possibly both - "custard apples" were pointed out to me - sort of spikey apple shape/size right? - they were so common wherever it was they were lying in the dirt all over the place. i really wondered if they were edible, to be so disregarded..

They sound like the same thing, but the one I had was much larger, about the size of a large grapefruit. It was indeed green with a shape a bit like a pinecone with sort of a scaly appearance. The fruit is built like a scaled up raspberry with a outer skin added. Each of the scales on the outside is actually a fruit with seed. They merge into one fruit though they will come apart into sections if you work at it a bit.

The ones you saw might have been of a less desirable species. Or perhaps because it is so hard to judge ripeness (I've been told it is best to pick them about five minutes before they fall from the tree) no one bothers. Or maybe it is like the apple trees in Littleton. No one picks the apples because people are shy about picking something from a tree on the street.

I had mine chilled since that was the serving recomendation.
