Save SF/SF!
Sep. 19th, 2005 01:58 pmI finally got around to reading last week's SF/SF, and there is terrible news. Jack Avery, the wonderful editor in chief of SF/SF, has decided to cease publication of his 'Zine! He cites not being good at promotion of SF/SF, a weekly PDF being the wrong format for covering bay area fandom, and lack of people filling key positions to help him out. I can certainly understand burn out (I've been burnt out on fandom myself at one time), but perhaps we can save SF/SF by a show of support and real help. I have emailed him voicing my support for him and my thanks for what he did and saying that if he wanted to bring it back as a bi-monthly or monthly magazine I would be willing to throw myself into the breach doing promotion for SF/SF. I ask others to at least give their thanks to him for the issues that he did put out and if you can commit to giving support, do so! Perhaps like a TV show threatened with cancellation we can bring this excellent publication back from the brink. Email Jack at SFinSF at gmail dot com.
Please pass this on!
My Letter to Jack:
Dear Jack,
I am probably not alone in finding the passing of SF/SF a very sad event. I think you underrate you skills considerably and overrate the quality of having web page skills. I though it was wonderful to have a set weekly publishing schedule of something that looked like a real newspaper for fans. If you should ever reconsider, say with a less ambitious twice or once monthly schedule, I would be more than happy to work at promoting your magazine wherever I go and with everyone who is fannish. With Issue 7 I had actually printed out a hard copy to use and pass around and it looked very fine even in black and white.
Also on a personal note if you should care to hang out sometime I would be more than happy to buy you a dinner as thanks for all the fine work you did over the eight issue run of SF/SF.
Yours,
