More Thoughts on Moving
Jul. 31st, 2005 09:50 pmAs reported earlier I am now in San Francisco and right now I am hopeful and all that everything is going to work out. I have a job starting out at new hire wages for this city, meaning more than I’ve ever earned before, but not much of anything by standards of the area. They will go up if everything goes well and I settle in as a productive and useful employee.
But let me assume for a minute everything goes well, that means I’ll be living here for quite some time to come and I’ll need a place to stay. I have some money, not a lot, and my first paycheck will arrive on the 15th if I’m doing my job right since I’m managing payroll for the firm I’m working for as well as all our clients needing that service. Incentive to learn fast right there. It will be for my first week of work and not a huge amount relatively. So no new money really coming in until the end of the month and I’ll be deciding if I move out here in one to two weeks. At that point I’ll need to start looking for an apartment or roommate situations. I think it would most likely roommate because I don’t know that I’d be able to afford my own place for on order of a year or more. I think I have enough for that.
Once that is done I’ll need to move some of my stuff out here, my computer, clothes, one bookcase’s worth of books, and household goods. I expect to rent and drive to do this. Why? I do know that I will sell my car as this city is insane to drive in from what I've seen. So I don't want it out here where AFAIK it would be harder to sell since it doesn't have the California emissions stuff. I do need to bank all or almost all of the money I get from it for the purchase of a car if I need one in the future. I might a small amount to get the ugliest scooter or motorbike I can get that would work well.
I will have to go back periodically to help my parents out with all the junk I have in their basement since I’m not moving it here, but that’s a long term expense. So I think I won’t have huge moving expenses, but maybe I’m forgetting something. I hope that the $600 in rainy day savings and about $900 in checking plus first small check $360 that I’ll be able to cover the move. But I don’t know. I suppose the first thing to do when I realize this is definitely going down I’ll have to find out how much it actually cost to rent a small truck, van, or something.

Noe Valley's a nice place. A couple of my coworkers live up there.

Date: 2005-08-01 12:30 pm (UTC)It costs a pretty penny to rent moving vehicles, as you'll probably find out... do you have anyone with a big vehicle willing to drive out round trip with you?

Another option is one that I used to move stuff from California to Denver, namely, "drive-away" vehicles. You can contact agencies that need cars moved from one city to another, then drive whatever vehicle you get, full of your stuff, from here to there.
It's a crapshoot, obviously, and not good for moving large furniture. But it's cheap, since you pay only for gas.
I hope you have fun there!

Whoo! Walking up hill all the time.
