A Party Experiment
Sep. 24th, 2003 12:53 pmMarbled Tea Eggs
I tried this recipe today while I was home sick.
Slightly Modified:
6 Eggs, boiled and cooled
½ cup Soy Sauce
2 Star Anise
2 Tablespoons Black Tea
6 Cloves
Cold Water
Gently break the shell of the egg all over then put in the cold water with all other ingredients. Bring to a simmer and cook for three hours.
It produced a rather good tasting egg and I think it could work for The Crew of Grenadine party at MileHiCon. Perhaps do a third of the eggs this way, a third colored with beet juice, and a third just plain. Jane has said that she might be able to help me peel eggs on the Thursday before the convention. I'm thinking the right number to do would be 2-dozen.

Date: 2003-09-24 12:27 pm (UTC)2.5 c water
2 c soy sauce
1/3 c rice wine
5 smashed slices of ginger
2 stars anise, broken up
2 ounces Chinese golden rock sugar, or 1/4 c sugar and 1 T honey
Optional: chopped scallion, 1.5 in cinnamon stick, 1 t orange peel
This is also amazing for cooking chiken in. (boil the sauce, dunk the chicken, simmer until done, about 20 min). I'm not sure if the eggs are as good if you don't cook a chicken in it first.
I got this from Barbara Tropp's Modern Art of Chinese Cooking.

Date: 2003-09-24 02:41 pm (UTC)If it works out then I might try to build a Crew of people who want to throw parties at other conventions. Like say... Minicon, Worldcon, and Westercon.
