Colorado Attitude
Jun. 2nd, 2005 09:03 pmThe Olympics is something that most governments fight to host. Colorado fought not to host them after local politicians had landed the bid. In 1972 a ballot initiative banned funding for having the Winter Olympics in Colorado. The politicians who worked to get the Olympics were also for the most part turned out of office.
Lots of people thought the people who voted for that were crazy, but I've always thought the people made a savvy and good decision in that case. For that matter I think even today we don't need to promote Colorado as a destination, quite the opposite. We need to tell people that it sucks to live here so they'll stop moving into the state.
As part of this I resolve to stop correcting people say things like Colorado is too cold. Unless they're really cool. Also I'm going to play up radium in basements and plutonium in the water supply in stories I tell about the state. And I'll emphasize cougar attacks on joggers and hailstorms as well. And tornadoes! Don't come to Colorado, I'm moving away myself. Honest!

Date: 2005-06-03 04:52 pm (UTC)Honestly I wouldn't be so upset about the growth if it wasn't all these vast sprawling suburbs where anyone without a car is a cripple. I hate driving in them too because of the vast turning lanes and all the lights and other cars. Can't there be a happy medium between being as insanely spread out as someplace like Houston and as insanely dense as New York?
