Inspector Javert Wins Another Case
Mar. 22nd, 2012 12:58 pmWell, I had a successful morning of testimony yesterday. I wish that I could have stayed to see the testimony of the Police Officer, but I did my part in the case and then went to work. I testified against a shoplifter and he was convicted. I am glad to see that I am more credible than the guy who was trying to shoplift.
I do feel slightly bad for him, but not too much. He made his choices starting with shoplifting and not being honest with me about what happened, doggedly repeating the weak story that he was going outside to look at flowers with the bag of items that were not purchased. Then he chose not to take a plea that would have given him a 90 day deferred judgment instead of a conviction at least twice according to the court record.
Oh, and folks, if you are going to shoplift because you are poor, shoplift inexpensive items. If you get caught it looks a hell of a lot better if you are shoplifting potatoes instead of organic blackberries. Contrary to Les Misérables most of us Inspector Javert types feel sympathy for Jean Valjean stealing the loaf of bread and will try to get the poor thief off with a lesser charger.
