And FIG is Born, Sort Of
Aug. 28th, 2005 11:06 pmThe very first brunch of the Fannish Imperial Guard happened this morning in the Samovar Tea Lounge at the corner of Sanchez and 18th Street in San Francisco. The plan is to both uphold the ideals of Emperor Norton and socialize with other Fannish and friendly people over a Sunday brunch. And have mild adventures. Damn, our three goals then.
Supreme Commander Kate of the Army of Sheeple was well within the margin of error for arriving exactly at 11am with myself, the Grand Chancellor Mishalak, about 30 seconds behind her. Generalisimo Calvin was quite late, but he had called ahead to leave a message to that effect and so no one was at all put out. Good conversation continued for quite some time on a variety of subjects. When the time came to decamp from our brunch SC Kate headed back to the East Bay while G. Calvin and I figured out where to catch a Golden Gate Transit bus to Marin City.
We found the service to be somewhat lacking as the #80 bus was slightly late (2 minutes I think) and we saw the connecting bus to the Muir Woods pulling out as we pulled up. I would think the right thing to do would be to wait until the bus from SF arrived. But no, so we had a rather long wait until the next bus (1 hour+) so we went to the Ross and the Starbucks. Also there were a surprising number of empty storefronts in the shopping center there. On a positive note I found a neat long-sleeve-tee with a crow on it (Modern Amusement brand) and a nice polo. Calvin did not find anything he liked, though I thought he looked very nice in a pair of blue jeans.
When we finally got to Muir Woods NM at about 5:30pm it was cool and I was very glad that Calvin and I had thought to bring along a lightweight jacket and a sweater respectively. We hiked in about a mile and a quarter, saw many impressive trees, and met nice people visiting from Brazil. It was a great experience.
On the way back I made a mistake that resulted in us eating at Panda Express. See the bus back to the city was not there and I went in to use a bathroom at the Longs Drug. Of course there was someone ahead of me and I was thinking, "Maybe I should skip this." But I used it and rushed out and found that we had just missed the 80. Very, very sorry. Not the end of the world, but it did delay us about an hour or so. But now all is well as I write this as we are both home and everything. Next Sunday the nebulous idea is to head to Golden Gate Park.
But there is one possible regret this evening. I managed to actually hear that a hurricane is headed for New Orleans and it looks like it might be the end for the city. I was going to go to Texas, New Orleans, and on to Florida, but it never completely came together and now it looks like there is a real chance I might not be able to. If New Orleans survives then I will head there next summer for a weekend.
