The Moving Experience
May. 29th, 2005 09:18 pmFriday I was already out at my parents’ house. I left with my father for my apartment at 8am. He gave me a lot of information about driving a diesel truck on the way and it seemed that everything would go swimmingly. However very rapidly I realized I had bitten off somewhat more than I could chew. We filled up the truck with furniture and boxes before noon and the apartment seemed very little further along.
I returned in the afternoon at 3:30 with my mother and was still in a buoyant mood as my friends John and Martin showed up to help. I kept right on running up the stairs trying to keep moving as fast as possible. My friends were great help in getting out items like the filing cabinet and I’m in their debt. However the place was still not done at 9:30pm when we knocked off.
Arriving home around an hour later we saw a small herd of deer in the lower yard and I caught sight of a yellow-red gleam of eyes in a nearby clump of thick trees. A cougar on the stalk? Only a few items got unloaded that night, the rest got done the next morning.
Saturday found me sore but optimistic. I was still determined to do this. After all there were only three chairs left in the whole apartment. By three in the afternoon the heat was getting to me and it seemed like the last bits were being very stubborn. I was starting to snap at people and eventually I just called off the party idea calling everyone I had the number for in my phone.
I didn’t get home until six and then sent out an email calling the thing off. Unfortunately I was too late for some people and I regret that. I’ve learned that books are especially deceptive and next time I’m moving I’m going to spread out the book packing much more and have everything actually in boxes and moved before I even start talking about parties. I’ve also learned that it would be a good idea to top cabinets in kitchens with linoleum or something because they acquire a nasty mixture of dust and grease endemic to cooking environments.
I still have much to do and I am not spending nearly as much time online since I have to borrow the use of my parents’ computer until I’ve got my own set up and working. Lots to do here. Also if I move somewhere I may just move a small useful core of my collection with me and leave the rest in storage here if my parents will let me.
