I can't do my usual mocking review of Finder by Emma Bull. Somehow it is one of those stories that has wormed its way into my heart. I would desperately love to know more of Orient, the titular and viewpoint character of the story, but I know that if I got that wish it might very well spoil the story. It was a light fantasy adventure in the modern urban tradition, indeed I found in shelved in the "young adult" section of the Denver Public Library. Yet this 317 page story seemed a lot more true than the weightier tome by Tad Williams that I read recently.

I also ended up crying in parts. I'm especially prone to crying unlike most guys, but still this story had sad parts to go with the parts that were full of wonder and fun. It had a feel like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, if that makes any sense, not using the same mythology but using the same idea that sometimes to be true things that we want to happen won't.

I think I will have to add this to my collection to be shelved next to The Last Hot Time a comparably good book and seemingly set in a similar version of the borderland between our world and fairy. I also liked this story much better than Emma Bull's classic War for the Oaks which was one of the works which kicked off the urban fantasy.

What: Finder by Emma Bull
$7.00 in trade paperback from Tor Books, you'll have to hunt for a hardback.
Who's if for: People who like fantasies like The Last Hot Time and the works of Terri Windling. Buffy fans who read. Though I think everyone out to give it a chance.
Who won't like it: People who get upset when things don't turn out the way they 'should'.
Personally: Thumbs Up

The Last Hot Time was supposed to be a Bordertown book, I've heard, but some publishing complications made it not officially so (that would explain why the cops in that one seem awfully familiar to anyone who's read stuff like Finder...).
