Which I Will Make Available at the Convention for a small fee of 25¢, or you can print your own from right here! (Though I will format the printed version better.) People who give actual useful contributions to this project (like "Hey I ate there and it was good/bad/pricey/etc" will share in the profits (if any) of this enterprise. If you are going to MileHiCon and/or know someone else who is, why not point them at this page? It could be useful. Note on format: if you do this in tight little print, like arial narrow 10pt in three collumns with almost no blank space around the edge it will all fit on two pages.

Does not include restaurants inside the hotel. The hotel located at 6363 E Hampden Ave in zip 80222 if that helps you at all to figure out how far these things are.

The Bagel Deli & Restaurant
6439 E Hampden Ave - (303) 756-6667
This is the closest to the hotel without actually being in it, in theory. I've not actually walked it out but on the map it is about 300 feet from the hotel. I have seen it before so walk east from the hotel it should be on the same side of Hampden.

Sushi Boat
3460 S Locust St - (303) 757-3181
Apparently good and quite close to the hotel. Just walk a bit east to Locust Street.

Chili's Grill & Bar
3625 S Monaco Pkwy - (303) 691-2928
Okay the official address is on Monaco, but it is over by the freeway next to the Continental Theater. I would guess the best way would be to get across Hampden somehow and then make your way south through the parking lots of the various shopping centers. Otherwise the lights will make this a 5-minute drive.

½ of a Mile

McDonald's
7075 E Hampden Ave
Half a mile east. Does anyone need an explanation of this place? No? Good. Don't eat there.

New York Deli News
7105 E Hampden Ave - (303) 759-4741
A fan writes that it is in fact a quite good deli with excellent cheesecake. They are also reported to have things as unusual as celery soda. According to the map it is about half a mile from the hotel, so well within walking distance. Pickles at the table and a lot of captioned TVs showing news. Expect the damage for a meal to be about $9. Worth checking out.

Golden Plate Chinese Restaurant
7180 E. Hampden Avenue - (303) 639-9898
This Chinese restaurant is open from 11am until 9:30pm. They've been in business a while as I recall so they probably won't kill you.

On The Border Mexican Cafe
7293 E Hampden Ave - (303) 337-7778
This is a chain restaurant just a scosh over half a mile from the hotel. The best that can be said for it is that they seem okay for a chain.

The Black-Eyed Pea
7300 E Hampden Ave - (303) 290-8809
Just a bit further down Hampden is The Black-Eyed Pea. It is on the south side of Hampden in the western end of Tiffany Plaza. You'll see it on the right side as you head east on Hampden from the hotel. I suspect everyone knows what this chain is like. They often have half-price appetizers from 3-6pm on Fridays.

Starbucks
5074 E Hampden Ave - (303) 639-3102
This is the closest Starbucks, note that it is the other direction from most of the places listed around it by distance. It is to the WEST of the hotel. It is probably over there in the Happy Canyon Shopping Center.

Einstein Brothers Bagels
7350 E Hampden Ave - (303) 689-9444
Also in Tiffany Plaza. Don't know where exactly, but it is in that shopping center somewhere.

Chipotle Mexican Grill
7350 E Hampden Ave - (303) 741-8980
Big burritos and fast. They use too much cilantro for some people, but I like them. And one of their ads is fannish. It says, "Be sure to save room for the waffer thin mint." Expect $7 damage for a meal. Much, much, much better than Taco Hell and environmentally friendly as well. They were founded in Denver.

Le Peep
7400 E Hampden Ave - (303) 694-3456
Le Peep is like a localish chain of Denny's that is only open for breakfast and lunch. I've been to one once when I was a kid and don't remember anything beyond that I had something with eggs in it. They have a reputation for quality and being slightly pricey.

WWW Dot Cafe Dot Com
7400 E Hampden Ave - (303) 796-2233
No idea what this is or even if it is still open with a trendy name like that. Also apparently in the Tiffany.

China Beijing Restaurant
7400 E Hampden Ave Ste 14 - (303) 773-8226
In the Tiffany somewhere.

¾ of a Mile

Old Chicago
7717 E Hampden Ave - (303) 695-5511
The pizza chain that tries hard to not seem like a pizza chain. It is across the street in the more prestigious Tamarac Square shopping center. It is just over ¾ of a mile from the hotel. I consider this walking distance, but then I only take about 10 minutes to go that far.

Burger King
4996 E Hampden Ave
Back to the west of the hotel on Hampden.

Ajuua Mexican Restaurant
7777 E Hampden Ave - (720) 747-0764
Apparently near Old Chicago. I know nothing of this restaurant. I've not seen it so it might be sort of around the back side of the shopping center. It serves wraps.

3 Jack's Sports Bar & Grill
7777 E Hampden Av - (303) 337-1107
Would anyone from a convention actually go to a sports bar?

Rodney's
7777 E Hampden Ave - (303) 750-7722
Your guess is as good as mine.

Fresh Fish Company
7800 E Hampden Ave - (303) 740-9556
This is back on the other side by the Tiffany, though not actually officially part of the shopping center. It is on the far eastern side and I've heard many, many good reviews.

Oshima Ramen
7800 E. Hampden Ave. - (720) 482-0264
This is reputed to be the best Japanese noodle house in Denver. Yes better than my beloved Kokoro. Priced from $4-16 this is a place straight out of Tampopo in it's dedication to great noodles. But obviously the prices reflect this. If you want a good cheap bowl, go to Kokoro. It is apparently next to the World Savings bank and the Fresh Fish Company. Rose notes that they make no concessions to American tastes, this is very Japanese.

Duffey's Bakery Cafe
4994 E Hampden Ave - (303) 753-9177
Apparently this place is legendary for its cinnamon rolls. To the west on Hampden.

Subway
3515 S Tamarac Dr
Included only for completeness, not a recommendation.

Las Caras Mexican Grill
3333 S Tamarac Dr - (303) 752-3753
On Tamarac Drive is another Mexican place that I know nothing about.

Lil' Ricci's
3333 S Tamarac Dr - (303) 337-6591
I'm tired of saying that I know nothing. Next year I'll get reviewers to hunt down information early. If they're not in the shopping center maybe they replaced the Mexican place listed above. The phone book isn't always reliable.

Pavilion
3333 S Tamarac Dr Ste G - (303) 743-9777
I have read that this is a nice "hole in the wall" restaurant with a menu for American preferences and a menu for more traditional Chinese cuisine. Seems like it might be worth checking out.

Benihana
3295 S Tamarac Dr - (303) 750-0200
By all accounts Benihana is a very good and slightly pricey Japanese Restaurant. They serve both sushi and slightly more tame dishes. Excellent place to impress someone, but don't expect to drop less than $20 per person on dinner (which is about the same as Applebee's if you think about it). It is on the east side of Tamarac Square off of Hampden. Turn left at the light.

Applebee's
3301 S Tamarac Dr - (303) 755-3085
I do know what Applebee's is though. Predictably decent food for a price that is about a grade higher than it is worth. What? Biased, moi?

Taco Bell
6460 E Yale Ave - (303) 758-7754
Need to make a cheap taco run? Turn right out of the hotel parking lot and right again onto I-25. Go north to Yale, the next exit, go right (east) on Yale to the Plaza de Monaco Shopping Center. Now when returning to the hotel it may in fact be easier to turn right again on Yale and then right on Monaco Parkway. Go south to Hampden and turn right again. No difficult lights, all right turns. Cool, eh? It is about one mile to Taco Hell.

Fazoli's
6460 E Yale Ave - (303) 692-1126
Hey there is a Fazoli's nearby the Taco Bell. Follow the same directions I gave above.

Beyond A Mile
I've left out lots of things beyond a mile. I note the closest examples of fast food restaurants, ethnic places, and some of Denver's best.

The Wellshire Inn
3333 S Colorado Blvd - (303) 759-3333
My impression is that this is a very expensive place for the country club set. I vaguely remember eating there once for a wedding reception, I was not impressed, but then I was like eight. To get there go west (towards mountains) on Hampden and turn right on Colorado Boulevard. It is just a little ways from the turn. 1.3 Miles

Wendy's
2223 S Monaco Pkwy - (303) 757-8939
East on Hampden turn left on Monaco and drive to Iliff. 1.5 Miles

Yanni's A Greek Taverna
2223 S Monaco St Pkwy - (303) 692-0404
Same directions as for Wendy's, there is probably a small shopping center there or something. 1.50 Miles

Arby's
8850 E Hampden Ave - (303) 770-7900
Simply head east on Hampden 1.6 Miles. That's almost to Yosemite Street.

Bruno's Italian Bistro
2223 S Monaco Pkwy - (303) 757-4500
The closest Italian place (by the book). I don't know anything beyond that it is a bit north of Iliff Avenue. 1.6 Miles

Beau Jo's Pizza
2710 S Colorado Blvd - (303) 758-1519
The original Beau Jo's (pronounced Bo Joe's) was a incredible place in Idaho Springs that served a deep dish pizza that would rival anything in Chicago. These things were half and inch thick and really good. I do not know if this quality survives in the chain or not. It might be worth a look. Go west on Hampden and then north on Colorado Boulevard. It is north of Amherst Avenue. 1.6 Miles

Little Ethio Cafe
2260 S Quebec St. - (303) 755-4777
Ethiopian. Go east on Hamden to Tamarac Drive. Turn left (north). The street eventually goes around a curve and then becomes Quebec. 1.6 Miles

Big Eddies Bar-B-Que
2260 S Quebec - (303) 337-6298
The closest Bar-B-Que place. Go east on Hamden to Tamarac Drive. Turn left (north). The street eventually goes around a curve and then becomes Quebec. 1.6 Miles

Nile House Restaurant
2260 S Quebec - (303) 745-3588
Middle Eastern? Go east on Hamden to Tamarac Drive. Turn left (north). The street eventually goes around a curve and then becomes Quebec. 1.6 Miles

Kokoro
2390 S Colorado Blvd - (303) 692-8752
Go west on Hampden and turn right (north) on Colorado Boulevard. Good, fast, cheap, defying that old rule. Expect a damage of $9 for a bowl and drink. 2.8 Miles.

Baja Fresh Mexican Grill
555 Broadway - (720) 904-0973
Can't stand the cilantro in Chipotle and still need a fast and good burrito? Hop in your car and head north on I-25. Exit at 6th Avenue going East. About 10 blocks from there just south of the corner of Broadway and 6th (there is a Kokoro on the corner, they're everywhere!) is a Baja Fresh. The distance is 6.2 miles, but it should be a fast drive on the freeway, say 10 minutes.

Mee Yee Lin Dim Sum Restaurant
3090 W Alameda Ave - (303) 922-8383
The name says about all you need to know about this place. They serve really good Dim Sum. Distant, but not too hard to get to. Go north on I-25 to Alameda Avenue, go west from there. Mee Yee Lin is just past Federal Blvd. About 7 miles. There is another place nearby in the Far East Center called the Jade Dragon. I often eat there with Rose. To get there just turn left when you get to Federal and then right pretty much immediately into the Far East Center. It is on the south side near the west end.

Goodfriend's Restaurant
3100 E Colfax Ave - (303) 399-1751
One of the immortal three Denver restaurants. They serve a mix of traditional American restaurants favorites like hamburgers and steaks and dishes from half the other cuisines on the planet. Go north on I-25 to Colorado Blvd. Exit and go north to Colfax. Turn left (west) it will be on your left at St. Paul Street. Big neon sign. 7 Miles from the hotel.

Racine's Bakery Bar & Restaurant
650 Sherman St. – (303)595-0418
Another of the immortal three, this one with a fancier atmosphere. To get to its now location go north on I-25 to 6th Ave, exit going east. Go past Broadway and Lincoln, the next street is Sherman. Turn left there. 7.5 Miles

The Buckhorn Exchange
1000 Osage St - (303) 534-9505
If money is no object for dinner, go here. This is a real old west restaurant. It has been in business since 1893, which is really something in this town where we tend to knock down anything older than 30 years. This is the kind of place Teddy Roosevelt would eat, and he did, and he even shot some of the hundreds of stuffed animals on the walls. Very expensive, very good food. Call for reservations. If the tramline to the hotel was finished you could ride right to the front door at 10th and Osage. As it is go north on I-25 to Colfax Avenue. Go east on Colfax and then turn right (south) on Osage Street. About 8 miles, but fast to get to.

A good idea. I've eaten at the New York Deli News a few times, and they're notable for having celery soda, (Dr. Browns, I believe) and they used to have some incredible cheese cake...also, pickles at the table and captioned sports events on many TVs. I'd say you're looking at about $9/person depending on what you wanted.

Have to agree on the Applebee's. Notable at Black Eyed Pea is that at least down here their half-price appetizers will be more than worth a meal on Friday 3p-6p... Le Peep is too expensive for what you get, even if the quality is nice the portions have always seemed too uneven for me. [shrugs] Haven't been to Fresh Fish, but have heard really good things about it. Also, I know people willing to make Taco Bell runs for gamers often gain much in good con karma...[blinks, looks innocent]

...so "a fan writes," would be just dandy. I can't improve too much on your comments on Benihana, but I'm trying to remember where else I've eaten up there. A ways up is a Village Inn: late-night sustenance is probably a good thing to seek out, too.

Is Viliage Inn open late? I can't remember. There is one over past Yosemite. About a mile and a half, debating if I should include it or not in the next section.

Most are open 24 hours...

...but all the ones I've ever been to (and that's a depressing number, I tell you) have been open until at least midnight, and later on Fri./Sat. -- and our local one is used to gamers. [grinning]

I'm pretty sure that this one has been open at least as late as 3 am on Fri/Sat nights ... and in all honesty, while it doesn't give the service that [livejournal.com profile] mtfierce is used to from hers down in the Springs, they do pretty well by me and I order a complex order. Worth it ... it'll be the equivalent of the Denny's ... if Chili's doesn't end up being that.

Also, as a side note ... (I haven't read the next section yet) ... there is always the King Sooper's right across the street and during most hours of the daytime they have a deli that has decent enough sandwiches.

I was going to write something about the Kings, and Sunflower Market over on Colorado as well, but I ran out of room. I combined them all into this one as well and fixed a number of mistakes. I could do a suplemental to this I suppose. Maybe even do that at the con. Have a sheet of additions and corrections.

As an out-out-towner, who won't be there but have been to many conventions, I'd suggest going out a bit further. In particular vegetarian or interesting ethnic tend to draw fans. If there's good public transportation you could focus on places further out along near the transportation.

What is this "pub-lick trans-port-ashun" you speak of? Honestly in Denver a person is better off walking or buming a ride. Until the tramline is finished next year there won't be much in the way of getting away from hotel without a car.

"This is a listing out to one mile from the hotel. Should I go further?"

You need to list a few "my editor is taking me out to dinner, so price is no object" restaurants, but otherwise you don't.

Unless there's a particular ethnic restaurant outside your radius that's worth the drive, and there's nothing comparible inside your radius.

When K and I did our guides, we included restaurants that were close or worth the drive. Or ones we felt like writing about.

It all depends on how much work you want to do.

Hmm, you've probably been with me on my better meals in Denver, and I suppose those places aren't near the con. If you're putting in a "must drive to" section, you should by all means include that wonderful diner (Friends?) where you have your Sunday brunch crowd - it happens to be the first place Andrew and I ate when we were checking out the town. I also liked the Asian fusion place we tried before seeing The Laramie Project, on Broadway I think.

Goodfriends. It is up on Colfax, so it is a bit of a drive from the hotel at 7 miles... Maybe I'll include it for grins and giggles in the next section.

I don't recall which asian fusion place we went to right now. And I'm sure there must be something closer.

Notes:
1) There's a Starbucks in the hotel, unless it's been dumped out with the switchover - but I seem to remember seeing pictures of it in the new advertising materials, so I suspect it's still there. So the nearest Starbucks is right there.

2) The Bagel Deli & Restaurant - this got rave, rave reviews during Tacticon, but I never had the time to head out to try it.

3) Sushi Boat
This is next to the hotel, actually - closest food. Note: while waiting for food, you can play with the boats floating down this oval track between the sushi chefs and yourself. Theoreticaly small bits of food could be put in them for people to pick up, but I've never seen them do that. Tammy and I like this place.

See you at the con!
