The trouble with British films is that it makes me want to shout things like "fuckin' bloody hell" when something goes wrong. There are two cockney(ish) gangster films that I've wanted to watch for a while, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, both written and directed by Guy Ritchie. Besides the bigger names Snatch is obviously the more Hollywood film since it has a slightly happier ending and a much slicker look, but it retains a verve of his earlier movie.
I did like it, but the tension and coincidences had me so on edge that I felt like I would explode. They also are not upper type movies where good wins and evil is punished, no they're of the sort like It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World where no one you sympathize with comes out ahead in the end. If not for the black humor and frenetic camera action these could be art house films contemplating how greed can insure that no one actually wins.
They were very fun, in their violent way, though they weren't so perfect that I'll have to watch them again immediately. They did inspire some lovely vicious ideas for me to use in my writing though.
What: Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch
Both available on disc and should be less than $28
Who's if for: People who like fast paced gangster films with lots of dark jokes and strange characters.
Who won't like it: Anyone who hates violence and thick cockney accents. (At times they should be subtitled.)
Personally: Thumbs up!
