A Revoltin' Turn of Events

Well I was going to pick up Katie and go see fireworks tonight. Unfortunately fate intervened to make this plan impossible. After going to her place my car would not start. No, not even the littlest bit of a turn over. The current working theory is that my car battery has an internal short as the car did start after pauldomes so kindly came to give me a jump in his truck. I made it back to Littleton as fireworks exploded in the sky everywhere making me totally miffied that I could not stop to enjoy them. As soon as I turned off my car (having found a good parking spot near my apartment first) my car was completely dead again. I rewarded Paul with wine and me acting silly for more than two hours.

All's well that ends well and all that. I'm going to bed now and I'm not getting up until it is time to go get a new battery tomorrow. Because though I drank plenty of water and won't have a hang over I did polish off half of that bottle of wine and I'm rather more affected by alcohol than anyone else I know.

One option to try before going to get a new battery: I've had cars in the past that would start with a jump but would not start otherwise, and would run fine after being started, exactly as you described here. The problem in both cases turned out to be corroded battery terminals. Try giving the terminals a thorough cleaning before shelling out for a new battery. Couldn't hurt.

I'm confident in the diagnosis of internal short. The battery had a leak around the positive terminal, when I first tried it the lights would come on and later it was completely dead, and the terminal was not massively corroded, it just had some from the leak.
