I just had a thought. What if Iago was a psychopath in the clinical sense of that term? That would remove the mystery at his apparent lack of motive. I'll have to buy or check out a copy of Without Conscience to investigate this idea further.

Sometimes real people don't make sense from our own point of view because their thought process really is different from our own.

After doing some reading I've found that it is not a new idea. I wonder if it would also aply to Aaron (Titus Andronicus) who expresses so much contempt for his fellow man.
