Okay, now I need to report on the rest of the DASFA Picnic. As I said previously Rick was the first to show up followed by Sourdough and Gail who brought their dogs along to the party. Patrick and Sue-Ann arrived and told us they had invited some friends of theirs, Jan and Mike Thompson, which sounded splendid to me since it looked like the turn out would be light. John and Bonnie rounded out the rest of our guests and we had a marvelous time. Good food, I got complemented on my pie making skills (go me!), and it seemed like everyone had a fun time. It was suggested to me that we should have our picnic in town next year, and I'm amiable to that idea, provided we can a find a park that is cheep or free and where we can barbecue. It is very convenient to be able to heat foods rather than have everything be cold cuts. I'd even be willing to shlep a small gas grill to whatever park.

In other news Sourdough reacted positively to the idea of a "Cookie Crunch" (everyone bring cookies) for the DASFA sponsorship of the Consuite on Friday night at MileHiCon. It he's not going to be annoyed at my changing of the tradition I think everyone else will be happy to go along with it as well. Chocolate has been a great theme, but I think it is time to move on. And also this means I don't make the Molé Chile this year. Good not to have to do that work, maybe I'll do it at Minicon instead. So this year I'll bring ice cream to make ice cream sandwiches and some oatmeal cookies. Or maybe Peanut Butter. The lovely thing about baking cookies is that I can do them well ahead and they don't cost much.

I left the picnic along with everyone else at about 8:45, I wanted to catch the tail end of Rose & Dave's big anniversary party along with Richard & Carol and Timmy & Kaia.

My offer to help still stands.

Wow that was a fast comment. I guess I'll have to break down and make it at the con. <grin>

Did I ever tell you that Katie's move-in date at Colorado School of Mines was 8/15?

I don't believe you did. Well I'm not surprised, I remember seeing the new white wash on the big "M" on table moutain the other day, so I figured the Freshmen were here. I'm off to Bubonicon this weekend, but perhaps I could check in with her sometime soon. I'm off Tuesday next week, I'll have to find out her new email and see if she wants to hit Tokyo Joe's for lunch or something. My friend Martin says the food at Mines is terrible, so she might want to get away from it.

She's still reading e-mail at kjennie@fireopal.org.

Maybe more than she ever did - now she has an internet connection in her room. When she was living with her father, she had no internet access at home.

Did you ever send her a MIFF?

As I remember I am sending her a copy, though I screwed up the address on the first one. I'll pester her when I get home since my email at work is funky. Hope my DSL is working right tonight.

The year I was chair of OVFF I instituted home-baked cookies in the con suite. Cookies are fast, easy, cheap, and people love them. Concom members did them well ahead of time and froze them. Cookies freeze well too, so no last minute frenzy. Well not about cookies anyhow. Also, if someone wants to contribute and can't attend, there are cookies that ship well. Cookies good.

Yes, I will have to specify home made or have people who cannot (will not) contract with me. Freezing the cookies is a good idea, though I think a marathon of baking on the 19th or 12th of October would still leave the cookies very fresh on the 24th. I figure I'll use my parent's house, they have a mixer. I might even be able to drag a helper along with me to do the baking.

I just wish there were something as easy and a bit healthy. I don't want our sponsorship to try to be everything, concentrating on one thing is best, but cons are overloaded with sugar and I would like an alternative at times. But I would like something easy that I could bake for my party on Saturday. Right now I'm thinking I'll do hard-boiled eggs. They take work, but I can buy 18 for about $2 IIRC. I'll do 36, some colored, some not, and lay them out with salt and mustard I think. Maybe some horseradish dip too.
