Suggestions, ideas. I've always wanted a top hat, but now I've decided I need one for MileHiCon. I've seen them lots of places, like FashionNation, but what's the best place to get one? You see at least one day of the convention I intend to be a weird dark goth Mad Hatter. Curiouser and curiouser. You see I had planned on staying in the consuite for much of the weekend. You know, going in there and having tea. Reading when I can't get people to talk to me. And suddenly the thought occurred to me that that would be rather like the endless Mad Tea Party. I've got a silver pocket watch. I do wish I had a longer chain with it, I might try to remedy that. Lets see. To be a Mad Hatter I shall also need a bow tie. Since I'm being goth it should probably be black and white polka dot. I shall also need a checked waistcoat and matching pants if I can manage that. Though I suppose black will do just as well.

I shall have to hunt through the thrifts for a suitable waistcoat. I think I shall be able to find a dress shirt with one of those upturn Victorian collars somewhere else. Then again maybe I should just wear the hat and go more modern with the rest. I dunno. Maybe it is too late to be getting something like this together.

You can probably get away with wearing an ordinary dress shirt. Or, you can see what costume shops have. I'm sure you can rent one. (You probably could rent a top hat too, but that isn't the same *g*)

It's Never Too Late!

What...I don't have a Victorian/Edwardian fetish? Not at all.
*searches for top hat*

So are you going to be at MHC? You could join my mad tea party in the consuite.

Probably not. At this rate, I'm not sure if my costume will be done in time for Halloween. I'm seriously lacking any ambition to make it.

You could be the normal person who comes to my very goth mad tea party. What I'm saying is that this is going to be a mad tea party by virtue of going on for a very long time rather than everyone trying to be characters from Alice. Thought I do intend to try and get a top hat.

Flossy's. for clothing, anyway.

(i hate her, and i despise the way she treats her merchandise; but she's got great stuff if you're prepared to dig for it.)

unfortunately all my victoriana is, necessarily, female-type-shaped and probably too small for you.

for a hat, i'd go to the wizard's chest. they have great variety. especially now, since they're gearing up for halloween.

i am presenting a workshop at MHC on hats, headpieces and fake hair and so on. i already have all he samples i can use, however, so if you need help, let me know -- i have time and will, in scant days, have an entire workshop at my disposal.

starting here (http://www.slave1designs.com/photos.cfm?gallery_action=view_image&gallery_image_guid=afb98a0c-a30c-48ff-a648-b0a9a8926890&gallery_collection_guid=ab4c637c-65bf-d230-4321-0c27539ff17d&gallery_category_guid=b606e552-65bf-d230-4204-e9e6b79f80c0) is a short sequence of the mad hatter a friend of mine did for an alice-themed show. obviously, her style is very vinyl-bondage-cheese-y, for lack of a better term (i'm half asleep), and that's not what you're going for at all; but it's interesting nonetheless.

IMNSHO, spats really make or break an outfit like this.

best of luck. i can't wait to see what you come up with.

Are you sure about the MileHiCon thing? I remember Rose (the programing chair person) lamenting that she'd have to drop this hat or fashion show something from the program because she'd not heard back from whoever was doing it.

Thanks about the luck. Tomorrow is going to be the first day I'm going to have a chance to go looking. Work has been a bear this week.

For the top hat ... I got my velvet squishy one (that is now completely squished by three years of growing little girl) from Hobby Lobby around this time of year. It was pretty cool when I first got it and would be rather Mad Hatter appropriate. I plan to chat you up when I'm not too busy with volunteers.

See you in a few weeks!

Fashionation, Flossy's, and others have only ever had small, medium, and large, which is bogus as hell when it comes to hats. Same problem with gloves. Grrr.

Try Amazon Vinegar Pickling Works for properly sized chapeus, including top hats: http://www.amazondrygoods.com/

They don't seem to offer online shopping yet, but they have EXTENSIVE paper catalogs for costumes, and pattern/notions/sewing supplies.
