In Need of a Top Hat
Oct. 3rd, 2004 07:38 pmSuggestions, ideas. I've always wanted a top hat, but now I've decided I need one for MileHiCon. I've seen them lots of places, like FashionNation, but what's the best place to get one? You see at least one day of the convention I intend to be a weird dark goth Mad Hatter. Curiouser and curiouser. You see I had planned on staying in the consuite for much of the weekend. You know, going in there and having tea. Reading when I can't get people to talk to me. And suddenly the thought occurred to me that that would be rather like the endless Mad Tea Party. I've got a silver pocket watch. I do wish I had a longer chain with it, I might try to remedy that. Lets see. To be a Mad Hatter I shall also need a bow tie. Since I'm being goth it should probably be black and white polka dot. I shall also need a checked waistcoat and matching pants if I can manage that. Though I suppose black will do just as well.
I shall have to hunt through the thrifts for a suitable waistcoat. I think I shall be able to find a dress shirt with one of those upturn Victorian collars somewhere else. Then again maybe I should just wear the hat and go more modern with the rest. I dunno. Maybe it is too late to be getting something like this together.

It's Never Too Late!
What...I don't have a Victorian/Edwardian fetish? Not at all.

unfortunately all my victoriana is, necessarily, female-type-shaped and probably too small for you.
for a hat, i'd go to the wizard's chest. they have great variety. especially now, since they're gearing up for halloween.
i am presenting a workshop at MHC on hats, headpieces and fake hair and so on. i already have all he samples i can use, however, so if you need help, let me know -- i have time and will, in scant days, have an entire workshop at my disposal.
starting here (http://www.slave1designs.com/photos.cfm?gallery_action=view_image&gallery_image_guid=afb98a0c-a30c-48ff-a648-b0a9a8926890&gallery_collection_guid=ab4c637c-65bf-d230-4321-0c27539ff17d&gallery_category_guid=b606e552-65bf-d230-4204-e9e6b79f80c0) is a short sequence of the mad hatter a friend of mine did for an alice-themed show. obviously, her style is very vinyl-bondage-cheese-y, for lack of a better term (i'm half asleep), and that's not what you're going for at all; but it's interesting nonetheless.
IMNSHO, spats really make or break an outfit like this.
best of luck. i can't wait to see what you come up with.
