September Morning- Weehawken, New Jersey
Sep. 28th, 2004 12:24 pmThe woods were deathly still as sun rose behind trees slowly shedding their autumn leaves. The assembled press corps waited nearly silent as the fog that had invaded during the night from the nearby ocean began to lift. Then from the sacred grove the men in conservative business suits began to emerge. They assembled into tight ranks and then their chief stepped forward. He looked concerned as he raised a hand covered in bits of gore and a coating blood and pronounced, "The portents are unexpectedly less favorable. There were signs of incipient disease about the liver. The consumer confidence index falls one point nine points to an adjusted reading of ninety-six point eight."
A chill went through the spines of the Bush supporters among the assembled. As long as the ceremony of the financial entrails had been performed no incumbent president had survived an ill sign in September before the election. They would, of course, say that it was very close to the magic one hundred level and so their chief would have a chance. But deep down even the most faithful now had a small pit of doubt. Would this pronouncement it the New Jersey woods end their rule?
