Well sorta. For years I avoided Nestle products. That was just a choice, not a religion as it was with some people. I avoided them because they seemed to be in a grey area in their behavior and there are plenty of other producers of food out there.

So it's going to be for me in regard to Orson Scott Card because of this commentary. There are plenty of good SF writers out there who are not against giving me the right to marry if I so choose. I won't skip cons just because he'll be there, but it would be a strike against going to one. I won't be all religious about it, but I'm going to encourage my friends not to buy his books, or if they do to buy them used so he doesn't get any money.

... I got halfway down that page, and my mouth was literally dropped open in complete shock. What a fucking prick!

No big loss for me; I never particularly liked his books, anyway. But I'll be damn skippy sure not to buy anything of his new ever again. Jesus Chris.

(typo... but I think I'll keep it, I like that)

Card's been one of my unofficial boycotts for some time. I grew tired of his homophobia during one book series in which he had a gay character state he was probably born with a genetic defect, and his homosexuality was therefore Nature's way of ensuring he wouldn't breed. I'm not shocked by his essay on same-sex marriage. Annoyed at its logical fallacies, but not surprised he said it.

He sure seems to have an unnatural affection for that keyboard. Or the vision of his own enthralling words....

But holy cow, what a dolt.

Jesus, I see he still likes to preach. ("Nor does society benefit in any way from treating it as if it were." -- WTF? Since when does _society_ gain something of A and B's marriage despide their sexes?)

I read a couple of Card's books years ago and deemed him talentless. Having read this I now also deem him scum.

Ugh. Ugh, ugh, ugh. I wasn't reading his stuff anyway, so my joining the boycott won't help much. But please take this as my whole-hearted support.

I've never liked his books, and now I don't like him.

Thank you for the link. I was going to rant, but went and ranted in my own journal instead. I have never liked his books that much so he wouldn't have missed my business, but I know some people who are fans and maybe this will make a difference to their book buying patterns now.

And? I've never had reason to assume anything about his views before now. I've only read Ender's Game by him and from that I never would have assumed him to be narrow minded.
