I want to be remembered as being like Ebenezer Scrooge. Remember what comes at the end, "...That he knew how to keep Christmas well if any man possessed the knowledge." I am not a Christian, but I do try to keep sort of a Christmas spirit in my heart, even when it is not the Yuletide season. But I enjoy the yearly reminder that I get watching my favorite version of A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott, the one I remember watching as a young boy. And now from my own strange imagination here is my own bit of that Christmas tale.

The Obituary of Ebenezer Scrooge
A titan of the Exchange and the social life of our city died peacefully in his sleep three days past after celebrating Christmas with his Nephew Fredrick Holiwell. Mister Ebenezer Scrooge will be sorely missed both at his place of work and by the poor of London for whom he has long been a champion. For two years short of a full score he has been a loud proponent of improvement of the conditions in the workhouses of London to benefit the many destitute souls who live in such harsh conditions. Despite the general unwillingness of the government to spend more on such charitable projects he has had quite a bit of success. Many of his allies in the cause said that he brought just as sharp an intellect to it as he had previously dedicated to his business operations alone.

While Mr. Scrooge was not often to be found in the church pews he is remembered by many as being one of the most Christian men in our capitol. He gave frequently to help the poor as well as championing them in politics. One of his frequent sayings was that, "We should all keep the same sort of charity in our hearts that we are inspired to by Christmas, right 'round the year." That holiday held special significance to the old man and he greatly enjoyed all the heart lifting traditions of the season, though he eschewed the commercialism of extravagant gift buying. His chief employee, Robert Cratchit, fondly remembers that Mr. Scrooge delighted in giving anonymous gifts to the needy. "In later years I realized that the Christmas when he changed his attitude towards the season we received a huge turkey as a gift on Christmas morning. When I saw him doing similar for other families in later years I realized who must have sent us that prize bird."

In a final act of charity he has given the majority of his considerable estate to the young Rev. Timothy Cratchit, son of Robert Cratchit. God rest you Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge, and send a flight of angles to wing you to a well deserved rest. Services will be in two days time, donations in his memory should be sent to the Exchange addressed to Rev. Timothy Cratchit.
