Happy Birthday Richard!
Sep. 27th, 2008 11:43 pmActually yesterday, but today was the party. There was Thai iced tea made my yours truly, beer, and those Chinese fried cream cheese and crab thingies, cupcakes, and for a while we toased marshmallows in the garden. Richard's birthday falls very near to our friend Roel's birthday, so in all the years I've known them they have had a combined party. This year it happened at a house belonging to one of Roel's friends who owed him a big favor. Very nice house over in the Barnum neighborhood.
Many of the party guests were people who I only known from parties hosted by Roel. And I still only know a few of the people well enough to associate a name with a face. Like Stacy. Other than her it all blurs together. Some of that was the punch with alcohol that I had early in the course of the evening. The other part is not having good hooks to get these people into my memory. A very nice evening though.
So Thai iced tea. My recipe is getting close to perfected. At least with the dry proportions. The amount of water is still a wee bit uncertain.
1 cup of loose black tea like English Breakfast
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 tablespoon star anise
1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon dried orange peel
Mix all ingredients together. I kept fiddling with the amount of water and sugar so that part will need to be perfected on the next occasion of making it. But my estimate is six cups of water with this to make a bit less than five cups of concentrate. Add to this a cup of sugar. Dilute with two proportions of water to every part of water. Add ice and a good amount of condensed milk.
