While I was driving back from Bubonicon with Rose I thought that a possible idea for conventions/fandom to reach a younger audience might be to create an advertisement cool enough to go viral. Many of us have voluntarily watched funny or sweet advertisements online and passed them onto friends. What if fans made one for their convention or club? My first thought was to do an homage to the Discovery Channel's Boom De Yada ad, more the long version than the short version or the more static group sing along. I can imagine bits with someone going out on stage for the masquerade singing, "I love costuming" or from the critter crunch driving Fang "I love robotic wrestling".

Now all I need is some filkers...

Spoken
Astronaut 1: It never gets old, huh?
Astronaut 2: Nope. It kinda makes you want to…
Astronaut 1: Break into song?
Astronaut 2: Yup

Sung
I love the mountains, I love the clear blue skies
I love big bridges, I love when great whites fly
I love the whole world, and all its sights and sounds
Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah

I love the oceans, I love real dirty things
I love to go fast, I love egyptian kings
I love the whole world, and all its craziness
Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah

I love tornadoes, I love arach-a-nids
I love hot magma, I love the giant squids
I love the whole world, its such a brilliant place
Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah
Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-dah, Boom-de-ah-da, Boom-de-ah-dah

We're looking at doing a series of youtube videos to promote the video masquerade at Costume-Con 28 in Milwaukee (about 18 months out).

Dragoncon has "Dragoncon TV" promos. Mostly parodying TV commercials.

We did something like that for Polaris after we changed the name from Toronto Trek, and put them on Youtube. I was recognized a month and a half later at Dragon*Con. So it does work.

(Mind you, the guy who recognized me lives about an hour west of Toronto... but he definitely recognized me from the videos.)
