I was ready to totally fall in love with this book by Tamora Pierce. It is like a lighthearted fantasy version of the Miles Vorkosigan books. In this case the daughter of a very famous knight has an adventure doing what she knows she wants to do with the aid of someone who sees her potential. The thing is that I wanted to story to come to a satisfying conclusion. Instead it seems to be the first book in a saga. I don't mind stand alone books where the characters come back for more adventures, but I hate waiting for the next book and when stories go on too long. To me it felt like this book had lots of light fluffy detail and not a lot of meat. Not enough to make me enthusiastic about the next one anyway. I suppose that's part of the function where it shelved with the "young adult" books in the library. I was interested to figure out that I'd read about the main character's mother years ago in Alanna, The First Adventure. It was a book I greatly enjoyed as a pre-teen in part because it was about a girl who wanted to do boy stuff. I found that neat.

I will eventually get the next book in her ongoing saga I suppose. Not entirely happy with it though.
