Hollywood Suckfest on Horizon

I just ran across the fact that I Am Legend is being made into a movie... staring Will Smith. Is there any universe in which this could not suck in a bad way? I mean WILL SMITH? The man has one acting mode that he can or is allowed to do (from my perspective it amounts to the same thing): plucky comic relief turned lead. I have never seen a movie with him in it that he wasn't an annoying and jarring presence. The only tolerable movie with him in it was Men in Black, which was silly to start with.

The way I ran across this fact was seeing a production still in an article about an Italian jacket manufacturer in the LA Times. Nice look, too bad it will be terrible.

I've seen Will Smith act when he's not in action-adventure mode. The Pursuit of Happyness is definitely not action adventure.

And think about it. The last movie adaptatation of I am Legend, The Omega Man starred Charles Freakin' Heston. It's not like he's got much to live up to.

Argh, really? That is a shame. That's one adaptation that really deserves someone with decent acting chops.

bovil is right to a point - Will's said to have been very good in The Pursuit of Happyness. But I fear as you do, that once he's in a movie with vampires - a genre movie - he'll revert to form.

Of course, it'd be nice if they did a 'Batman Begins/Casino Royale' and surprised us with a straight version. I'm not putting money on it tho.

FWIW, I've been hearing about Will Smith being tied to that production for about five years now, so I'm not sure how much real danger there is that it will be made.
