I've used Semagic under windows, X-Journal under MacOS X, and LogJam under Linux. They all work fine, but honestly I mostly just use the web interface unless I'm offline (a state I strive to avoid).
I got Semagic because someone recommended it, and they swear by it, at least. It seems fine, I guess (these days I usually have the Mac with me when I'm at a con or at an airport or something and floundering about wirelessly, so I use X-Journal more).
(As for archiving LJ -- I know people have done it, especially back during the whole breastfeeding wackiness if you remember that, but I don't have any recollection of how.)
