So there is the online site trying to select a New Seven Wonders of the World. They make some interesting choices as candidates. The Acropolis, Alhambra in Spain, Angkor in Cambodia, the pyramid at Chichén Itzá, Christ Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, the Roman Colosseum, the Statues of Easter Island, the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto, the Kremlin and St. Basil Cathedral in Moscow, Machu Picchu in Peru, Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, Petra in Jordan, the great Giza Pyramids, the Statue of Liberty, Stonehenge, the Sydney Opera House, the Taj Mahal in Agra, and Timbuktu in Mali.

It is very geographically balanced, but I am not sure that it really takes in the full scope of what the world has to offer as far as great structural wonders. Is the Statue of Liberty any more or less great than the Golden Gate Bridge? Does the ancient wonder of Stonehenge out do the slightly more recent Lincoln Cathedral? What is a Wonder of the World? Was the World Trade Center one? If bigness is a criteria it may well have been. What about the Pentagon then? Or the Mall in Washington in general? The Palaces of Westminster?

New York alone has so many wondrous buildings and structures that you might be able to get seven right there. And what of practical wonders like Hoover Dam? Or any of the other hydro electric dams across the globe. I understand Canada has some very impressive ones as does China. For a near perfect beauty it is hard to compare the Taj Mahal to anything, but that is exactly the sort of apples to oranges comparison such a list needs to make. How does it match up against any of the other royal dreams built across the globe? Not just Neuschwanstein, but Versailles, Sanssouci, and The Winter Palace as well.

In short I think this list is rather short sighted, picking mainly tourist destinations.

If it doesn't help me in at least one version of Civilization, it's not much of a Wonder. :-)

Have a look at Around the World in 80 Treasures, which tried to the same.
