Fires in the sky and on the earth. If we lived in a more superstitious time I might think these were signs of angry gods and spirits. The other night a few lucky souls spotted the aurora borealis north of Denver very late at night. Today there are fires burning both north and south of our city. Should we make sacrifice to them out of honey and milk or is it so serious that we should give our leaders over to the flames as once was done to kings of Ireland?

Or perhaps the signs are of a passing great. Hal Clement, fan, writer, and all around good egg died on the morning of the 29th according to reports. He died peacefully in his sleep having returned from MileHiCon this past weekend. His passing, but not the way that he went, saddens me. Would be that we would all be lucky enough to die in our sleep at a ripe old age after doing something we enjoy.

I don't think Hal Clement would approve so much destruction in his name.

On the other hand, a burning Bush might be just the thing.

Fire has to happen sometime, it is the only thing that renews the forest. If not now then later, so I don't see these two Colorado fires as a bad thing. Especially given how they started (both accidents due to the wind and power lines) and how little destruction or loss of human life there was with them. The one down south of town only destroyed a few out buildings on the Cherokee Ranch and served as a wake up call to all the people living in the woods down there. Hopefully they will heed the warning and spend some treasure cutting down trees around their houses.

Yes, if Bush wants to enact the Sacred King, he should be prepared to be sacrificed, especially when things are going badly. We are losing jobs every day, and our people are dying in Iraq. Seems time to me.

I deny that I was thinking anything like that. <grin>

I saw Hal briefly after the costume contest, I think - I greeted him in my usual bubbly, awkward way. ("Hey, it's, um, you again! Yay! Great to see you!" and soforth. Hooboy.) As brief and silly as it was, I'm glad I could see him, before he took up his walking stick for the next great journey.

Yeah. Oh and welcome to my journal. What name would you prefer me to use in my con report?

Hey, happy to be here! (Happier still to have found your journal by a complete fluke!)

Any old name is fine - Amanda and Eibii (pronounced as "A.B.") are my two big standbys. Take your pick. ^^

Aww, fuck. I got to met Hal once - great guy, very personably, and of course, a damn fine writer. He'll be missed.
