Have you ever done something dumb, like opening up a really OOOOOLLLDDD thing from the back of the icebox out of morbid curiosity? That's how I would describe my downloading a digital version of Laurell K. Hamilton's Micah. I haven't liked her books since the year 2000. And about three quarters of the way through I couldn't stand it anymore. Even listening to the prose while cleaning was more than I could stand. Anita Blake may be the dumbest protagonist who ever hunted vampires. Yes including any of the crew from the original Dracula. Why yes, let's do something I've never done before in front of a federal judge. I'm not even a magic user, but I'm clever enough to go, "Why does using the blood of a magical creature, in this case a wereleopard, to raise a zombie sound like a really blood bad idea." If it had been a physical book when what I'd thought would happen started coming true it would have met the wall with a thump. This is piss poor writing.

Yeah, yeah, I know those who can't criticize. But what kind of a person thinks that it is a bright idea to vary the way you do Something Really Bloody Dangerous™ without testing it away from bystanders first? And then she realizes that she's doing a Bad Thing™ just as she finishes up. At that point I shut it off and didn't look back.

And having every sort of were* things rubs me the wrong way as well. Why not have were butterflies as well? Bah, bah.

I never read the Anita Blake books, so I can't comment on them.

I did read some of the Merry Gentry books, usually in hardcover off the B&N bargain rack. My sister described them as big-publisher Mary Sue erotic fanfic, and my sister is a connoisseur of Mary Sue erotic fanfic.

I have a thing about characters doing thing that are intellectually stupid. Emotionally stupid I get, but this... And just because it is self insert fanfic doesn't mean I'll give it a free pass for being bad. There is plenty of good stuff that is a bit or a lot self insert. Like that Sherlock Holmes book, The Beekeeper's Apprentice. Total Mary Sue, but the POV character isn't a moron and I don't mind that after a few books she bags Sherlock. Total guilty pleasure, but well written.

Don't mind me sharpening this stake, it's for the plot bunny that just lolloped past...
