I've heard about these mythic boys who are just self-interested perfect guys with too much money that they spend on clothes, pedicures, and alcohol. Supposedly they fill up the Castro so much that any "real" gay guy cannot find a date there. And I've seen maybe a dozen since I started working in the Castro four months ago. Mostly in the bars I see the same middle aged drinkers working on their 4th beer of the night that you see everywhere in bars. The next most common bar denizens are the college aged guys out for fun with friends. There probably exist a few of them, but for the most part I think this is yet another myth started by bitter guys who got shot down by someone who they were really shallowly attracted to. Much like the straight guy myth of the frigid ice bitch that won't look beyond his ugly exterior to see the prince inside when they're just looking at her exterior and lusting.

In other news I tried to make a friend last night. It did not work out, but I had a nice conversation with Gill from Toronto. He looked lost when he came into Zig Zag on Castro street so I followed him out and went to have a cup of tea with him at Cafe Flore. He lives down in Fremont and I think we could have been friends, but I did not press him again when he decided to leave. Eh. I might try again tonight.

There were more of them there about twenty-five years ago... :^)

<grin> Perhaps... I keep being told by guys about 50 years of age that the bar was really something years ago, nothing like it is today.

When we lived across the bay in 1980 or so, we occasionally went to the Castro to visit friends, and there were tons of clones running around. And tons of everybody else, in every costume imaginable (especially on Halloween).

Around 2000 I saw a documentary about gay high school students in San Francisco, all complaining that they hated going to the Castro because it was full of old farts. Which made me feel rather like an old fart myself...

That would be me, I suspect...

Not that I'm bitter. ;)

And before you ask: no, I don't know Gill. :P

Oh heck no, I would never ask that. Toronto is like a real city, not like Denver where there would be a good chance that if you mentioned a guy's name I would go, "Oh him, he the current toy of my ex-boyfriends previous bf."

Well maybe I just go to the wrong bars, but I seem to see the same guys there. Age 45, looking at all the college kids with a combination of lust and hate, know the bartender, and they'll either order me out of "their" bar or try to buy me a drink after I've already had two and I'm headed home.

Castro Clones are Legendary, not Mythic. They really did exist, even if the stories have become somewhat exaggerated...

Well they certainly exist, but not in the vast thundering herds that are talked about in the legends.
