Hindsight is 20/20. And thinking back on it I would have been better renting a weekend's worth of gay porn and watching it than going to Yaoi-Con. I felt alone, excluded, and uninterested. I did buy some things, but nothing I could not have gotten off the internet. There were nice people there, but nothing happened that is going to turn into a friendship online or off. So this was a $500 lesson that if I want fun and friendship there are no shortcuts and I will just have to work at it on my own.

It was a great weekend for not seeing people. The hotel arrangements made that even worse.

About half my regular gang ([livejournal.com profile] mzmtnlion, [livejournal.com profile] lobolance, [livejournal.com profile] lferion, [livejournal.com profile] kelbebop and quite a few others) just weren't there in the first place, and a bunch of other people were only there part of the weekend.

Made it much harder to create something that wasn't just squealy-fangirl-land.

Shopping also wasn't as good this year, or rather the Aestheticism Cybershoppe wasn't stocked to the gills with new manga and anthologies that I was interested in. Picked up a few things ("Ooh! This one actually has a story!") but it wasn't the manga-binge of past years.

Sorry it didn't work out. I do wonder if it was just too big a con, though I don't know what the membership size actually was. When you're already depressed, a con where you're on your own can just magnify it--and when it's abig con it's hard to hook up with people.

I have just seen the BASCon schedule (small slash con next weekend, South San Francisco) and concluded that there is absolutely no reason to go to it even for a day membership, other than to see one or two friends and acquaintances who will be there. A deep and abiding lack of interest in tv made in the last twenty years means that there are approximately two panels I would have the slightest interest in going to.

I like some television, trouble is that I don't care for most slash. I love gay characters, but I do not care for revisionary versions of characters I care about for the most part. Now making characters I do not care for into ones I could... that would be interesting.

$200 for a hotel room, $100 on food, $60 membership, $26 public transit, etc... This city is way too expensive.

I would have been so commuting for that one.

I'm puzzled by the public transit part, though; don't you have some sort of monthly pass system thereabouts? (Our rightwing county executive is trying to hike the price of ours drastically, now that gas prices have gotten more people interested in public transit again.)

BART, Bay Area Rapid Transit, the only practical way to the airport besides a taxi does not have a monthly pass. There is a small discount for buying fare in a large block ahead of time, but they still charge per trip. Fare to the airport is $4.85 each way. Commuting cost would have been $9.70 a day and a 45-minute commute. And I did not know it was going to be so expensive for a hotel. I though I was going to end up paying around $130 total. Minus the minimum of $29.10 on transit it seemed a good deal to get a room for being able to crash after parties rather than having to go home early or whatever. Despite the cost BART still manages to lose money, probably because it tries to make up 60% of expenses from fares.

As it was I still ended up using BART three times and using a taxi once in the course of the weekend.

MUNI, the SF Municipal Railway, does have a monthly pass. It costs $45, but is only good for trips inside San Francisco.

awwww, thats too bad

i think this year's con did have a bit of bloat to it...i for one was quite unhappy about not being able to get into the opening ceremony. but yeah, even though i did come with my two roomies, we had an nearby hotel room and different interests....

suffice to say it was a somewhat more independent con, cause i was mostly going solo to workshops, and didn't even see too much of my fellow revolutionary girl utena fans except on saturday night (btw where were you?).

i did feel a bit more...outside looking in this year cause of the bigger crowds, etc, but its all about just taking a breath and plunging in. i think i'll fork over the money to stay at the con hotel next year maybe. was the $200 with 2 other roomies?

anyways, i'll be setting up a livejournal later on, it seems to be the way to share with friends. it was nice chatting with you. ah if only i had more time...and a con hotel room ;^)

It was $200 for four days. I didn't want to stay four days, but I didn't make myself clear so I was stuck with more than I wanted. Bah.

I went to the cosplay thing and then I was feeling tired (read depressed) and uninterested in sticking around to see more show. So I went back to my room and slept.

But I cannot tell who you are from what you posted here.

oops, guess i should have mentioned in my first post...my con name is Miko Ranjuro (couldn't resist using engrish).

anyways, yeah it was a crazy busy weekend. one of my roomies was more interested in exploring SF than the con. 4am bed times and being pulled in different directions sure did make me bit spacey.

so yeah, thats why i'm paying extra to stay at the con hotel next year, i really want a more relaxed pace. and i think i will try and hop in the bishi group, if i can manage to be as outgoing as the others...at the very least i think i'll volunteer.

well, i hope you get in touch with the local community and find that you like it there.

Sorry that I didn't meet up with you on Saturday night. I had planned to, but I just failed to see you. See you around the net or livejournal though.
