And I dreamed it was 1944 and I was in the United States army in some fashion. I fought in the confusion of D-day and across France and then into Germany. I was tired, cold, dirty, and the fighting seemed to go on forever. Somehow I'd been separated from my original unit and fought with a battalion of free fighters from all over Eastern Europe. After fighting our way into Germany it seemed that history got off track with us moving ever further eastward into Austria, Hungary, Ukraine, and when the war's end finally came I went with a friend to a nation in the Caucasus. They had beautiful architecture there; great buildings with copper colored windows that looked like someone had remained ancient fortresses as modern office buildings. Simplified and soaring but retaining shapes that made them more than just boxes. They sat upon high cliffs above ancient towns that were obviously being modernized. My companion told me they were doing this to fend off the soviets, modernizing at a breakneck pace. He reported and was decommissioned; I guess I didn't have to since I had been with the US army. I wondered now if I was AWOL or listed among the dead or maybe even released to join the battalion of anti-Nazi fighters that became anti-Soviet fighters. My dream didn't make that detail clear.

We finally got to a hotel and it was wonderful after all this time, years it seemed in the dirt and mud, to be in a real hotel. Not for a night to clean up, but the start of a new life. We stripped off our clothes and went together into the bath. A real bath, we washed up and made love there in the warm water. Wonderful dream at the end after all the nasty parts I went through earlier in it.
