Right now the apartment smells strongly of spruce tree. That would be because I have put up our Yule Tree. In the hall there is a smell of baking that is inspiring me to bake a pie... It is all good on a very cold day.

We cut down our tree in the mountains last Sunday, but we left it outside until today figuring that we did not want or need to put it up right at that minute. My father brought it up to Denver in his truck today and we had a pretty easy time putting it up. If slightly sticky with sap.

Everything involved with this tree has been great. Getting the tags at the district office in Fairplay (my family's ancestral hometown) was dead easy and the price of just $10 per tree cannot be beat. County Road 56/Lost Creek Road was bumpy, but easily passable with just about two or three inches of snow on the ground. The day was cold, but not at all freezing. Most of the time I just wore a sweater. My father got a huge bushy tree of at least 4 meters (13 feet) in height. We got one with a terrible bottom that we cut off to just 2¼ meters (7½ ft) ultimately. Just scrubby branches on the bottom due to it being right next to another tree that will now have a much better chance at good health. It is a very narrow tree and perfect for our apartment. Along with a lunch in the truck of turkey salad sandwiches and apple spice tea it was a perfect day in the woods. No crowds to speak of and all the other tree cutters we saw were doing their thing much lower down.

None of the short lower branches are going to go to waste either. We are using them to decorate the apartment and make wreaths. I am thinking about doing the latter project tomorrow evening or maybe tonight. It isn't December 1st quite yet, but today just worked out as the best day to do things with the snow that is probably coming on Saturday. Plus we'll have more time for friends on Saturday. If you're reading this entry and are in a position to come you are invited to the early part of the party on Saturday. Show up anytime from noon on for gentle socializing, spiced cider, apple pie, and tree decorating. The DASFAns are going to be showing up around half past six (6:30pm). Richie will be back here when he finishes work, sometime between four (4:00pm) and quarter to six (5:45pm).
