San Francisco is actually a very conservative town. Not in the American political jargon sense where conservative substitutes for reactionary, religious, and/or rich, but in the sense that they are sure of things being basically good and not wanting that to change. Sure they are liberal in the sense that they would like everyone else in the country to change their ways to be more like the San Francisco, but otherwise they do not want change.

I think this is probably not a unique observation, though I might be one of the few that says it without the nasty venom of one of those true red "conservatives". And that is the trouble with observations like this. No matter how honest and straightforward I am being nothing much can come of it because of the chorus of nasty types who would use my message of San Francisco needing to change to bash the city. It is like how as honest and forthright some Republicans are about wanting to fix what is wrong with affirmative action by making it about economic disadvantage instead of the color of a person's skin they are stuck with just as many, if not more, twofaced liars who want to use such arguments to pull a bait and switch to dismantle it entirely. Because the extremists are no fools there is very little room in either the local political system or the national system for actual reform of the things that are actually wrong.

And I am not dooming and glooming saying there is no hope. Things certainly will get better (just compare now to twenty, thirty, or fourty years ago if you don't believe me, not everything is better but there has been improvements, big ones) just with a lot of pain and trouble that might not be necessary if people in this country could have an honest dialogue.
