Miffed: The Returned of Miffed

One of the frustrating things about fandom is the lack of definite information about what is going on. There isn't the fannish equivalent of the The Economist, where a reader can be somewhat assured that some research has been done. So take this as the return of Miffed with actual reporter like content.

What is Miffed? My mostly monthly fanzine. I did it online for just eight months last year before I fell down about doing it consistently. So this is probably the first of many re-launchings. It does not purport to be complete, though I would like it to be more so, especially for Colorado fandom. I'll put in just about anything and if it ever gets too large I'll spit it up into different editions or try to get someone else to do different regions. But the likelihood of that is slim.

So here I am again in all my self-serving glory. Let's do it.

Potential Colorado Worldcon Bid
In response to my editorial about COSine and the tentative plans for a Colorado in '08 bid for Worldcon I received additional information from Michele Dane, a fan from the Colorado Springs area. She communicated that there are substantial reasons for opposition to the Chicago in '08 bid, though did not give me specifics at that time. As of yet the claim that there is opposition to that bid by members of the group known as the Permanent Floating Worldcon Committee have not been substantiated.

If you have any knowledge of the situation please contact me, chernobog at mishalak dot com. I am willing to let informants be anonymous, provided 'e gives me a way of verifying who 'e is, such as allowing me to call or the email coming from the same address as has been used by the individual for years, etc... I am interested in knowing about claims of opposition, that there isn't opposition, additional information about the personalities in the Chicago bid, and the like.

I was also given information supporting the idea that there are enough people with relevant experience in Colorado for a Worldcon bid. First she lists some people with experience who might be interested in supporting a bid. So I decided to contact most of them to see what their actual level of support is.

·Ben Millar (I think she means Bruce)- He has not yet been contacted by the potential bid and is somewhat skeptical at this point.

·Gail Barton- Gail has said that she would help out should the bid succeed, but not in a leading position.

·Sourdough Jackson- Feels much the same as Gail, thinks Denver having a Worldcon would be interesting, but isn't sure if this is the bid for it.

·Susan Carnival Reese- Says that she has not agreed to volunteer for anything and has not yet been contacted. She isn't really interested in being involved with a bid, she is just now thinking about getting back into fandom after having been gafiated for quite some time.

·Kent Bloom- He was talking about the bid at COSine, so I think it safe to assume he has some interest. Though at this point he has no plans to throw a bid party at Noreascon, the 62nd Worldcon this year.

I am told we'll know for sure if the bid is going ahead or not by Westercon in July.

So that's the preliminary report. I'll be publishing this more widely after everyone has had a chance to comment.
