Avoiding Bids
Sep. 10th, 2003 01:18 pmOkay I'm going to head off this Worldcon stuff the only way that I can think of. I will not appeal to logic, by pointing out that Denver does not have the fanbase to run a Worldcon, I know that logic has nothing to do with bids. Similarly I won't say that I won't or can't because I've seen how effective that has been for other people being prodded to bid for the big one. Instead I'm going to distract everyone with thoughts of a new Denver convention.
I've had it in my head for a while that something like a relaxacon would be fun. With an eye towards that end I am going to start recruiting a Crew to see how well my idea would work on the small scale of running a really bitching party at MileHiCon. That way even if the convention does not come about I've done a good thing in getting a great party together at MileHiCon.
My concept for running the relaxacon would be to have many groups within the convention doing the work so that everyone at the convention ends up doing as little work as possible and still have a great con. To be a member of the Unnamed Denver Relaxacon everyone would have to work on a crew contributing something to the con. That way work gets spread out rather than ending up the task of a small group of volunteers. I stole this idea from Rose and her mandatory participation convention, Karval Kon.
So first things first, I propose the formation of a group to be known hereafter as The Crew of Grenadine. Named for that critical ingredient in mixed drinks and because it sounds cool. Plus since grenadine is made from pomegranate juice and honey it includes two of my favorite things. I need my loyal friends to either participate or track down some other fan and twist their arm until he or she agrees to help me out. Or at the very least comes to a Crew Party.
The floor is now open for people to make suggestions, push forward unsuspecting fans, and propose times for us to meet before the convention.
