And I like how they say they won't find a dodo. I'm sure they would have said the same thing about the ivory-billed woodpecker until now. ;) (I know, I know... completely different issue. But still, there could be a small population somewhere isolated. Or maybe at some time in the future, they'll be brought back through cloning like in Jasper Fforde's books.)
I remember reading a story where they discover Passenger Pigeons and it turns out a bright boy is releasing them after cloning from samples preserved in alcohol. Which unlike formaldehyde doesn't damage DNA. Eventually he's tracked down, and punished for all the right reasons (uncontrolled experiment upon all of us), but he gets off fairly lightly because people are mostly happy.
