I'm really glad I didn't write about this last night. I was angry and everything so I would have just ranted about the fact that my car died again. I had gotten to the gas station over in Englewood and filled up. When I tried to start my car up it tried and died. Thereafter nothing worked. Not the headlights, not the dome light, nothing came on in the dash, so I rolled it out to the street and parked it by the curb. I'm just glad that today is a holiday. If it were not a day off I would be calling in to say I could not make it today. My dad thinks it is something really basic like a wet relay that shorted out. He suggests going over to see if it will start today and if it does to get it to a service place.

All I can say is that I'm not impressed with the reliability of Saturn cars. I don't think I'll buy one again.

The weird thing is, my roommate's Saturn hasn't broken down once that I can think of in the 2 years he's had it...

Sure, and one can find Toyotas and Hondas and Lexuses which _have_ broken down early. But these are all statistically insignificant, because the sample size (my room-mate's/brother's/uncle's/mom's car or whatever) is too small. But when you look at large numbers of vehicles over long periods of time, it becomes obvious that Saturns are "affordable" for a reason. The same reason that Hundais and Kias are cheap.

Speaking for myself, I can't afford a cheap car.

I always figured Saturns were sort of the iMacs of cars -- cheap because they were packaged rather than customizable, but not necessarily of poor quality.

Yeah, but I don't think I'll buy one again. It would be tempting fate. Even if they are mostly good the universe would hit me with another bad one just to make a mockery of my faith in statistics.

You're not the first person I've heard that from. In fact, Saturns routinely score low in the lists generated by the independent ratings agencies (like J. D. Powers & Associates). Try a Toyota next time. Toyota and Honda consistently garner top honors in reliability, cost of ownership, and owner satisfaction.

I had a Toyota (in GM colors), but my father dunned me into selling it and buying this car from him. I wanted to stick with my Toyota even though it had 200,000 miles and this one had just 20,000. Once again my judgment is better than his.

D'oh! I hate gaining new wisdom - it always seems to be accompanied by some sort of inconvenience, misfortune, or even pain. :/

Yes, well. That's why he's the father, and you're the son.
