First real memory of something: Age five or four. I woke up early one morning, which was unusual for me. I was the sort of person that could not wake up to watch Saturday morning cartoons even though I wanted to. I rarely rose before 11. So I was looking out at the early light through the pines and I wondered, "Why are these trees here?" I starting thinking about rain then an even bigger thought occurred to me, "Why is any of this here? Why do I and the whole universe exist?" I think it was the start of my making deeper questions. Though I might or might not also remember learning how to walk even earlier in my like outside my Grandma's house.
First car: A truly sad diesel powered Volkswagen Rabbit. I think I drove it four times before it died. My second car, the red Dodge 600 lasted longer. It was a beast from the 1980s.
First real kiss: A Russian exchange student who pretty much jumped me, her name was Katya. I'm not like some gay men; I can in fact have sex with women. I just find men much sexier and I'm not fantasizing about a guy when having sex.
First break-up: One year ago. B___ turned out to be crazy and started smoking again. End of that.
First job: Pulling flight books for airline pilots. Summer job at Jeppesen Sanderson.
First screen name: My name. Unless you count when I was Winfield on some MUDs I have always been Mishalak or some variation. Oooo, creative.
First self-purchased album: I am almost postive my first purchase was three CDs, Amadeus, Legend, and Star Trek: The Astral Symphony. Yes, I've been a geek for a long, long while.
First pet: I've never had a pet. There were family pets, but none that I would call my own. I've not wanted one since I grew up.
First credit card: Age 14 IIRC. I got my own account, credit card, and check book.
First true love: None. There have been a few guys I have lusted after, but no one that I've been in love with.
First enemy: I was a little drama queen as a kid so I thought of John Scott as my enemy, but it was a silly thing. I don't have enemies. At least I can say that for myself, no true love, but no nemesis either.
First big trip: I don't know. Apparently I was taken to Yellowstone when I was age 1. The first trip I took on my own was a drive to Utah in Spring Break of '97.
First music you remember hearing in your house: Polish Christmas music on my dad's big reel to reel player. He had these huge tape reels that he had recorded music on during the 60s and 70s that he would play for parties and holidays.
First broken bone: None. I'm lucky, remember?
First concert: Colorado Symphony when I was in high school. I'm a strange child, I wanted to go to the symphony and though going to rock concerts nuts. Of course I still do. I remember the audience applauded so much that the pianist had to come back and play another Mahler piece.
First serious illness: Age five, sick with phemonia for a week during the summer.
First brush with fame: I've been quoted in a Denver Business Journal Article about the local Star Trek convention. I was fairly at being interviewed by an actual journalist just because I'm president of a science fiction club. The article was pretty nifty too, no evil stereotypes. Or does this mean meeting someone famous? If so eating dinner with Connie Willis.
First drinking binge: Age 12. First and last. I've not been really drunk where I was left with a killer hangover in more than 14 years. At the time I was on a hunting trip with my father, Big Jim, Little Jim, Steve, and Bob. I got smashed on three cans of Old Milwaukee Beer. The next day I swore I would never get that drunk again, and so far I have not.
